metal detecting support vehicle?

looking for new mdsv last several vehicles have been f150 with straight 6 cyl. looking for something with a little haul room and some better mpg, probablly 4 cylinder with front wheel drive dont know much about either can someone ease my fears and steer me in the right direction?

VW Jetta or Passat wagon with diesel engine. 50 +mpg and if fuel gets tight you can convert to cooking oil. VW makes some small Toyota style 4x4 pickups with 4 and 5 cyl diesels but they are not available in the USA.
