My nickels worth. It has been my experience that larger coils (heavier) tend to miss some tiny objects when passed over by the outer part of the coil. The smaller units (more work) will see that fine item at an inch or two throughout the width of itself..
The larger, 12 inchers will see deeper and cover more ground. It's a trade off. I would rather the larger deeper coil. I use a 12 inc

I been at this for some time. I feel the use of a coil cover is good in gravel and rocky soil.. I would think the thin plastic would have little if any affect on depth on dry or wet conditions.
Having said that, I do not use a coil cover here in Florida because the fine sand finds it's way between the loop and cover so easy. Water detecting, on the other hand has it's pros' and c

Ah yes, water detecting. It's starting to get too warm for digging in the dirt here in central Florida. I just checked the water temp at the local lake. Just under 80 in the shallows (4 ft.)
