I don't know about the racer but I just dug 3 of these stupid things the other day which came in the zinc penny range just blipping into the penny/dime range,so I dug them up. I suppose at depth one just has to take the chance even though the beaver tail may be fooling us being all wrapped up in itself. All 3 were 7-8" in mild black dirt with nothing else around that I could detect. I g

It really does seem like some days signals present themselves, other days the door just shuts. I'd LOVE to know what causes this,it's certainly happening and not just "in my mind".

I also agree with those who've stated that the thrill of the hunt is where it's at. Because, anyone who has been at this for any amount of time knows that the find WILL come! Maybe not soon, maybe the next time out,but it WILL come. Having the machine YOU like for YOUR reasons is the way it should be. I'd love to try some different machines primarily to pit them against my current un

The reply you got is exactly correct the way I understand it also. My Whites IDX Pros are true ED180,if the discrimination is turned all the way down and the Black Sand switch is ON, it accepts ALL METALS. With the Black Sand switch OFF I think it is then about ED160-165. Having true ED180 is VERY handy to be able to hear EVERYTHING in the ground,if you hunt that way, which I do most of the time.

I'm getting more into the technical how and why aspects of the hobby and this has been a really good place to read about those types of things. Geotech is also great for some real in depth stuff, some of that transfers here in one way or another. So,that's why I joined,to learn and get better at this hobby, ask questions and eventually hopefully be able to guide others correctly, not just

I absolutely agree that in order to preserve the hobby,we have to be careful, and whoever is digging monster holes all over need to be given a huge fine. I am discreet to a point, and certainly don't go poking around somewhere when I know I can do it later at a "better" time. It's all about using the noggin to adjust to the circumstances. It is actually a good idea,I believe,to

That makes a lot of sense,it really is about trying to narrow down where good coins WOULD be,not so much MIGHT be,though both may be true. Anything to get an edge toward achieving the goal is what I want. VERY good post!!

Someone said it before me...x2 absolutely. PMs to different guys have also set the record straight(or at least straighter)on how things work and why. That is always what I want to know....WHY? Great forum!

That's a really cool article Kemper. Ever since I've gotten into this the filter through which I see is different. Everything is a possibility,a never ending quest for old coins. It really has become a welcome addition to my life,as I'm sure it has been with yours and everyone who has found this marvelous hobby. Thanks for taking us back...

Just an update to this and answer to the question. I contacted Bill Lahr who most of you know designed the Classic circuitry and he said when in disc, the threshold is NOT in play in any way shape or form. It ONLY has to do with AM. He mentioned the 5900 and some early Fishers that had a working threshold while in DISC but the Classics being 2 filter do not use threshold in DISC. I was concerned t

My question specifically is this:
Is the threshold a working component of the disc circuit in the Classic series or is it strictly tied to the AM circuit for ground balance reference and to hear the signal change while hunting in AM? I've heard "it can be" so far from a really reliable source which still doesn't definitely answer the question. If it is part of the disc circu
