So we all want the younger generation to pick up the Hobby - don't we? I'm positive this will be another park closed soon. I have left similar replies on other videos in the past about how I hate long handled shovels, nasty plugs and dirt all over in the parks. This is a video of how NOT to metal detect. What do you say? My youtube handle is mowerdog so you can read my reply. Am I just too cranky in my older age?

Last summer there was a father son detecting in one of our main parks.
Mind you, detecting was banned in our city for many years. The club fought hard to regain
the permission to hunt them. A couple remained off limits as well as the cities main sports fields.
The father and son were digging holes with a shovel. Big holes. One club member confronted the two.
They didn't give a rat's oss and more or less said "go F***K yourself' and kept on detecting and digging.
The club member gave up on asking politely to use an alternative digging tool ............and left.
No common sense.............just another slob hunter. No respect for others or public property..............or maybe even their own.
If we weren't such a civilized country, hear humans make good fertilizer..........................

That was hard to watch. It's great to see kids involved in the hobby, but I believe some supervision is warranted, at least until they have the basics down.

I can't see Youtube comments on my phone, but hopefully yours will make a difference.

I'm trying to give them constructive criticism. So far he has responded respectfully and I gave him more advice. I have made similar comment on other videos on youtube where the adults and experienced hunters using big shovels in parks. I would say that the top 4 responses from experienced hunters are - 1. I pay taxes and it's my park. 2. Nobody's said anything to me. 3. I can cut a better plug with a shovel. 4. Go screw yourself. I rarely get any back up with my replies! Is it just me?

Good point on the video games. Personally , I think this psychopathic desire to make videos will harm the hobby far more than poorly filled holes or long handled shovels.thumbs up I think it's hypocritical to whine about the damage newbies are doing to the activity and then turn around and make a bunch of videos making it look like nirvana out there to attract more newbies. I seldom watch ANY videos unless it's clearly instructional but have little use for videos made exclusively for the gratification of the ego.

I been sayin' it for awhile now as these Guy's with shovels in Parks are the Downfall to the Hobby. And when you make a comment you usually get a Smart Ass answer.
Most people who don't have a problem with it haven't lost any site's or they would be complaining to. Unless they don't have a passion for the Hobby and it is just a passing whim till the Country Club opens.

All you have to do is search youtube "metal detecting, parks, shovel" You will get a lot of hits. Even the big guys use shovels in parks. Yes, they are good. Actually just as good as me with a shovel. But shovels don't have a place in public parks.

What really makes me mad is at the 6:24 mark one of the kids said we really shouldn't do this in a park. The other one said, "I dont care". That video was posted on the 11th. I bet the no metal detecting signs are up by now.

It was Harold ,, just went over your head I guess smiling smiley
wjs's post makes my point even further....detecting was not the subject of the video , it was simply an excuse to make a video to put online and "jag off their egos" , to use your terminology,,,just like the vast amount of videos posted today on any subject in an obsessive , never ending , narcissistic need for notoriety.

My opinion is that poorly filled holes and long handled relic shovels in public places are far more detrimental too our hobby than any egotistical or non-egotistical video as long as proper recovery methods are used in said videos .

I personally do not know of any public sites being closed because of videos but I know of several that are now closed because of shovels and poor recovery methods . That being said I have not published a video in a couple of years or more as I like as little attention as I can get the older and wiser I get .

Well out of my 70 or so videos I'll bet every one of them have some kind of tips including pinpointing and retrieving targets.

Owner of the channel pulled his video!

I wish people would read the literature that comes with their detectors. I found evidence of some local idjit who dug up part of a telephone grounding system, and just left his plug wide open and dirt all over the place. Man, I'd love to catch that idiot.

i concur! calling "attention" to oneself in THIS hobby
can be detrimental to one's continuing pursuit of it!

OK. I see your point. I hate the show "Diggers" and the others that came and went. Most all sensationalized the Hobby. What you won't see in my videos is me and or Bill jumping in trees, sliding in the grass, jumping in lakes or putting a value on any finds. You see strait forward live digs and detector comparisons. My small amount of subscribers (3300) is not even close to how many people watch just one show of "Diggers". In fact most of my videos are "how to" videos. This would bore the average viewer wanting to see a silver coin laying on top of a plug without even hearing, seeing or why it was dug. What got me started in making "how to" videos was when Terry (Goes4ever) needed help in pinpointing with an Ace250 back in 2008. So I quickly threw a video together for him and posted it on Youtube. That video has 329,000 views. I think this video alone kept some people from making huge holes in parks.

I am holding back as much as possible here LOL BUT, in this NEW world of social media where anyone, and everyone can see everything that is posted, there needs to be MORE responsibility and clarity in what people comment, film, and or divulge on the internet. Now we are human, emotions can get in the way of rational judgement. We make mistakes.

I haven't posted any videos YET, for fear of misinterpretation. I don't want someone seeing me do something, and get the idea that what i did was right(I may be wrong). I plan on posting instruction videos, because i want to contribute, and i feel I have a lot to contribute. Some of you know me well on here and you know, that i am a stickler for correct terminology and information to the point of getting into full blown arguments(like the one I had two weeks ago about air test depth vs in ground depth with fbs/bbs machines) because, anyone who posts anything, is always being observed by another and we need to make sure, that we are not misleading.

Videos in general: I HATE(I don't use that term often) videos that glorify the hobby. You see these "over-the-top" jack-asses displaying these videos of them finding 15-20 silvers, or ridiculous amounts of gold, or jewelry(if i offended anyone here who has a video like that, I am sorry, but that is how i feel). Show-boating with a hobby like ours, that is so delicate, can, in theory, cause it to end in ONE day. Videos like that are only asking for trouble.

I like Bill S. I like his videos. I can count on one hand the videos he posted of him finding a silver coin(LOL yep that's a playful knock at you Bill smiling smiley ). but I have watched ALL his metal detecting videos many times over as they are great learning tools. He analyzes the signal, shows the dig, and then the find. I don't care if the video was ALL trash finds, the learning it provides is worth more than seeing someone dig a walker for the 99th time. So a big THANK YOU to Bill S.

About the video with the kid digging holes, in truth i didn't watch much of it because i didn't want to get too fired up about it. Metal detecting, like ANYTHING else, is something you need to be responsible with(I am going to stop on this thought, as a lot will disagree with what i have to say if i go further and i don't like to make enemies here, i like it too much. smiling smiley ).

I enjoy most of the metal detecting videos I see, and appreciate the effort put into them. Whether they're demonstrations of different machines' abilities, techniques, how-tos, or simply hunting. To me they are inspirational, informational, instructional, and often entertaining.

The videos posted from members of this forum are ones I try not to miss, as I value the abilities and experience of the users here that is usually years beyond my own. I appreciate the effort by those who post them.

I'm convinced that no matter what the hobby or job, there will be somebody complaining about something or what other people are doing or not doing. I work with a guy that I have known for 5 years now and I have never heard the man say a positive thing about anybody or anything. I'm convinced he could have a goose that lays golden eggs in his yard and he would complain about having to go to the yard to pick them up and then having to clean them up.

Some of you here are starting to put me in the mind of being a lot like the guy above. I have begun to get some accumulated years on this forum and there are some of you that I haven't read any or many posts of anything positive. I can be harsh with my words some times; I'm guilty of saying what is on my mind quite a bit. But I've not forgotten how to get out and have FUN and fellowship. Some of ya need to do just that; get out, get some air and sun, and HAVE FUN.

Dan, your right the world is full of complainers, it gets on your nerves after awhile. I tend to avoid them. We all complain but, some are just chronic.............
Complaining can be contagious on the forums, once some one starts, its an excuse to complain along with them.
At times I will tell the complainer, "...then go do something about it..."

i agree as bill's videos,(in my view) represent the "right" way to hunt.
his mechanics are "top shelf" because he "knows" what he is doing.
and his videos reflect this.as a seasoned hunter,i can tell he has many years experience.
i enjoy his videos and commend his efforts.am sure many people new in the field, will gain
important insight into the PROPER way to recover coins in the field, and also learn how to operate
various detectors effectively.
