Sold my ETP.
June 05, 2016 07:28AM
Got a call from a guy who knows a friend. The guy had just purchased a 6 acre property close to where a CW battle took place. he has been reading too many fantasy tales of riches and treasure. he asked me if I had a detector to sell. I told him no. He then asked me what kind I had so I told him a ETP. During the conversation I mentioned what it cost new. So he offers in cash what it cost new.

So.......I sold it for what it cost over 2 years ago.

I'll get a Nokta Relic or something when I get my tax refund. Can't wait.

I would have to sold it to him at a fair market price unless it was n.i.b

Detectorist, you made an excellent sale.

To essentially say "I would have sold it for less" is inappropriate considering both buyer and seller are satisfied. And it smacks of smug, self-righteousness.

He wanted it RFN and was willing to pay top $ for the privilege. Capitalism at its finest. As marcomo said; buyer and seller are happy and that's what matters.

Not smug and self-righteous? Your posts are a textbook example.

Your put down of Detectorist was implied with your first holier than thou post. Now it is obvious since you are referring to the buyer as getting screwed.

Detectorist did not screw anyone. Someone willingly made him an offer and he accepted.

He did not deceive anyone or sell defective merchandise.

He told the buyer what he paid for it new, and the guy offered to give him that of his own free will. Detectorist wasn't even in the market to sell it.

This guy knew it was a used detector, who knows why he thought it was worth the cost of a new one to him?

He probably wanted it yesterday like Champ said. Maybe being new to the hobby he didn't want the perceived hassle of assembling a new detector. Maybe he had heard from his friend about some of the things Detectorist found with it and said I want one that I know works the way it should. Maybe detectorist got a really good deal and the new guy had already researched and knew that a new one would cost him more. Maybe he is a serious impulse buyer. For whatever reason, he was perfectly happy to pay what Detectorist paid for it new.

At my age I haven't been called Sonny boy in a long time.

And I've never been called a chump before because I've never been one.

Now if someone, who was not a close personal friend or a family member, made a purchase offer for something I owned and I said "no give me less, please"...then you could legitimately call me a chump.

No,,I would have told him I'll take what it's worth.. I just added my second etp about 4 days ago,,off eBay said used one time,it has no scuff marks on the coil and receipt sent shows it was purchased 3-13-16 I paid $139.00 for it,,I just posted a etp on eBay that is on there now,,a good buy for someone.. Etp with 11dd coil and headphones for $199.00

I know what I do and you don't,I would have said no I don't won't to sell it..
If he wanted it and he was totally green and wanted to try it out I would have loaned it to him,if he liked it I would have shown him the ones on eBay
or sold it to him at say $130.00 if it's clean.

Just me though..

I think all of us have made deals where we came out on the good side and both parties were happy. I have recently gotten into prints ...Civil War art. One of my favorite artists is John Paul Strain and he has a print called "Escape from Fort Donelson" that I really wanted. It is out of print now...he only does so many. You can find it for $1500-$2000 if you are lucky. Well I mentioned liking that print to a fellow relic hunter who owns a picture frame shop. He said he still had some of the older prints by him and he would look to see what he had...and lo and behold he had one of those prints. I wanted it but was afraid of what it would cost. Then he asks me if I still had one of those Confederate block I buttons I recently dug here in town...I said yeah I still have them. He then says...I'll trade you that print for one of those buttons and I was all over that. He's happy to have the button and I'm estatic to have that print lol

Good for you. Who knows why some things are worth more to some folks than what they are worth to us.

I kind of felt this post was going to be debated...and yes it sure was as we are all individuals. I certainly paid too much for my first detector and never forgot it even after 25 yrs or so...I guess you know my feelings on the subject...
Re: Sold my ETP.
June 07, 2016 08:58AM
Some just have to have it. They shoot you a high price that means they're serious and they don't want anyone else to have it. The want you to not think about it anymore, just hand it over and be done with it.
I have sold things in the past with a stern price tag and some people will offer more...they want it right now, no if's ands or butts. That is the value to them, or what they think it is at the time.

Remember that the buyer knows squat about detecting. But he KNOWS the detector he is buying works and works Really Good cause he knows a lot of what the machine has already found. He also (probably) expects his bud to give him expert training to help him get to know it. Tell me THAT isnt valuable to a noob.

Not everyone has the same discretionary money available or treats their money the same way. I once attended a negotiating class for my company. The main takeaway was to find a solution where both buyer and seller are happy. These 2 did just that and NO ONE has the right to interfere in their business. Sit back and claim all the hypotheticals that you want, but all youre really doing is blowing air. (and also maybe stirring shinola on the internet, but we all know how imP0tent that is).

And possibly another win-win for both parties if the potential training takes place at the aforementioned six acre site.

"Probably" get training? Thats pure speculation that was not mentioned.. How does he "knows it works really good" full price for a 2 yr old machine with no warranty is not valuable, it's taking advantage of an anxious newbie.

Just as well you got rid of the Euro Tek Pro, and got a good price to boot.. Is a crappy machine due to its preset ground balance. Stack some silver halves or silver dollars under the coil and see how it does.Due to its preset GB being way too positive it causes issues with abilities to detect higher conductive targets, such as silver halves and silver dollars. Take your money and invest in something a bit better. Makro lowered the price on the Red Racer... I would suggest that... a far superior machine.

No, they're not.

As I understand it:

They are not supposed to advertise under the MAP which is lower than the actual MSRP

They can sell for any price they want, but can't advertise a price under the MAP.

That's why you see ads that say call for best price.

If you don't know this and, for instance, order from a Kellyco ad or an auction listing, then you've been taken for a chump. smiling smiley
