Favorite detector over the years...

Of course CZ would be my choice but the Explorer XS once they got the bugs worked out is probably the slowest but deepest of the entire Explorer series...
Of course I am a dedicated coin hunter and others may favor other aspects of the hobby...would be interesting and probably suprising the number of makes and models of other forum members...

I would have to narrow it down to 3 as My all-time favorite's :

CZ-3D
Etrac
Nautilus IIBa

The spots I hunt the Old Coins that are left are deep so depth is more important then separation to Me. As great as the Etrac is there are some sites and coins that the other 2 will out do it. Plus in My area everybody and there yuppie Brother has an Etrac so the CZ's and Nauty's give Me a edge. And Yes My ground is Mild to Moderate at it's worst.

Garrett pinpointer. I don't know how I found more than a few targets a day before those were invented!

Over the 40 some years that I've been relic hunting I've owned a total of 5 detectors.Metro tech, double eagle, nautilus mf, fisher 1266, and a t2se. In that order. As a kid my Pop would always tell me, when I'd complain about needing something new, "just do the best you can with what you've got." I reckon that's what I did with metal detectors. It's hard to pick a favorite, they all are. But if I had to, as crazy as it sounds, it would be the 500 pound double eagle for the plates and many other nice relics it found. Then it would be the 3lb T2 for its comfort and performance. smileys with beer

I never feel outgunned with my CZ 5, heck I have hunted behind lots of brands and still dig nice deep silver, etc. I have a Garrett 1250 that hangs around as a backup and it is pretty darn good itself !! H.H. Tony. My hunting partner hates when we trade sides of a yard and I pick out a few more items he Well I guess overlooked!!

The White's XL Pro for just a great classic analog experience, warm nostalgia that brings me right back to the detecting heyday of the 1970s and 80s.

The White's MXT. No machine has such a great mix of simplicity ruggedness and sheer performance.

Nautilus DMC IIb

Fisher 1266X

If I had to choose only one detector to use even with all the newer detectors available today I would still choose the Whites 5900 Di Pro SL or 6000 XL Pro. The needle on these analog meters will tell you everything you need to know about what's under the coil.

Well, let's see...
Compass Gold Scanner Pro
White's Goldmaster 66TR
Fisher CZ-5
White's 5900 Di/Pro SL
Tesoro Sidewinder uMAX
Bounty Hunter Tracker IV
Teknetics EuroTek Pro

there are others I have used over the years, that have shown a particular advantage over others depending on the type of hunt, targets, and soil conditions, that I also consider a favorite.

I Have to Agree, My first MXT (300) turned my detecting around, I found 3X Gold on the first Time out, In One 4 foot Sweep of the Coil for a total of 16.1 grams, I have owned the last 3 models and I am thinking of buying a couple more, Just in case, And Their coils are extremely hot, After over 6 years of using the MXTs and over 5000 hours of using and testing, Even this past week or so I have learnt 2 new things, One of them being this morning.

2nd favourite machine would have to be the minelab Musketeer Advantage, it was fun and powerful and very sensitive for a 5khz machine, It was a Sad Day when they stopped making them,

If I can only pick 1 it would be the Tejon.

If I can pick 4 it would be:
Tejon
CZ5
Sovereign
T2se

I have the Tejon, T2se, Surfmaster 2, and 1236x2 right now.

It was a detector made back in the mid to late 60's I believe, by 2 fellows who were die hard relic hunters. For a short time in the early 70's it was in hot demand here in my part of Virginia. I've tried to find a picture of one but no luck yet. It was one heavy unit but didn't bother me as I was a young buck full of spit and vinegar. The coil was covered in an inch of epoxy, had a metal shaft, all metal housing with tubes inside. It was powered by a 671/2 volt battery and one of those big square lantern batteries, I forget it's voltage at the moment. We could only buy the 671/2 volt battery and tubes from an electrical supply dealer, I was told recently by a fellow who repairs detectors, a very knowledgable guy, that at this point VLF machines have pretty much reached their limit on depth. What is needed is more power but who's gonna hall a generator around. I guess that's why this detector was extremely deep. It had lots of power.

Minelab Sovereign. Wet sand hunting with a Sovereign in the early morning on a beach watching the sun come up is just about as good as it gets. Throw in a little gold and a couple pretty smiles and you have the beginning to one great day.

Garrett AT Gold and Teknetics T2 Classic

Hard for me to pick just one. I tend to go into phases with detecting. Sometimes I get into strictly relic hunting mode and some times I dabble into coin hunting. I can think of units that their strengths are for one thing and not the other. Example...I loved the eTrac and CTX for coins. But I would choose a Tesoro over them both for hunting relics.

For relics, I found a lot with the F75. It has to be one of the favorites. But the last 6 years, the Minelab GPX sits in the #1 favored spot for me.

For coins, any of the Minelab FBS machines would make me happy. But believe it or not, the MX Sport...even with its rocky start...has found me more old coins than any of the FBS machines I've ever owned...combined.

A favorite for the time was my original White's Eagle, hip-mounted, with the Applied Creativity Six-Shooter Coil. Lots of fond memories tied with that detector.

ditto on the xl pro!..even today with a "black max" 6 " coil on board
will hold it's own with anything digital in the junk..that wonderful "dead nuts" accurate
analog meter, along with "modulated" audio at depth makes for a truly pleasant hunt!
very deep and a great "open field " hunter too!...older proven 4 pole design.

very true! "incredibly" accurate! .when it 'locked" up
there was NO doubt!

Re: Favorite detector over the years...

Fisher CZ-5/7
1236X-2
Troy X-3
Tesoro Cutlass II Umax
Those four have found me most of my better finds

Tesoro Bandini 2 umax..with10.5 concentric white donut..

that machine alone dug me over 300 Yankee buttons and a couple dozen Reb..

deadly in iron and deep too with that coil combo..

zero disc learn the clicks..I've never replicated that button total with any other unit.

I cleaned out just about every house site in my neck of the woods with that machine..

it's the reason it's so hard for me to get stuff out of these houses now days..even with the best tech available right now..
