off topic sorta
February 20, 2011 03:42PM
with Garret fixing the falsing problem and my belief in big business is recovering, can anybody work on this one. I'm sort of an old timer, I had a Dodge Colt in 1980 that got 50 miles per gallon, the best car now that you can buy ,that runs on just gas, get 40 mpg , so much for progress, Tom thanks for being a GOOD guy, I live with honesty
Re: off topic sorta

Yes and I had a Datson, I believe it was a 1980 also.
A manual 5 speed, 36 miles average, 45 highway.
Re: off topic sorta
February 22, 2011 12:31PM
Thats a good question.
And while were at it, do we need a Caddy or Vett that tops 200 MPH
Do we need any passenger car with more than 4 cylinders and 35mpg.
Not to be a kill joy .We recycled all the 60s hot rods back in the early 80s
and had a blast doing it but we know more now that back then . I hope.
The morning news talks of gas hitting 5 bucks this summer,
then every one can bitch some more.

As a kid in high school & working in a gas station, we used to sell gas for 27 cents a gallon.---Then we had our "gas wars", it got cheap then! (at least for a short time) grin---------Later on, I can still remember saying "if gas hits 75 cents--I'm buying a horse"!---Look at us now!!!------If/when gas hits $5 PLUS per gallon, there's going to be a WHOLE LOT of "re-adjusted" thinking in vehicles.---------Del
Re: off topic sorta

Whole lot of adjustment across the board.
Re: off topic sorta
February 22, 2011 11:37PM
5$ a gallon will likely kill the economy or at least cause everything to
cost more therefore less money in the pockets of the consumer.
Our politicians really care don't they?,,,but that is another story.
Re: off topic sorta
February 23, 2011 12:10AM
Steve is it the dumb azz politicians or is it us.
Re: off topic sorta
February 23, 2011 01:52AM
Fairly much both.
Who put them in office?
As history records, a people get
authorities they deserve.
(That's a scary thought right?)
Wonder what would happen if our Gov
didn't have so many regulations, EPA guidelines for oil refineries?
Wonder why our Gov didn't see this coming years ago and why they didn't
allow incentives for on and offshore drilling here?
I am sure they could give us answers to these questions but probably won't
for you see we the people really aren't smart enough to understand the answers
to began with so they will make decisions for us.
Don't believe the bs about running out of oil.
Oh, hell, here I go again another political post.
Bottom line, my opinion, this country is in real trouble on many fronts.
Like I said JMO, this is not the same country I grew up in.
So much for progress...
February 23, 2011 02:25AM
But remember that 1980 econobox has no anti-lock brakes, no airbags, no dynamic stability control, no side impact crash beams in the doors, no frontal crush zones, no high strength steel in the side-frame and probably no A/C, cruise control, automatic transmission or power steering. That car had a 75hp carburated engine, 0-60 in ten seconds and a top speed of 85 mph. You're a dead man in a bad accident.

My BMW 335d with an automatic transmission has 425 ft-lb of torque, will easily cruise at 135mph (I've done it) and will deliver 45 mpg at 60 mph.

That's progress.
Re: off topic sorta

Hi Caretaker, the old VW Rabbit diesel got 50 miles to the gallon-easy. Thats progress for you. You gotta laugh at some of the auto commercials on TV. "...and it gets 35 MPG!!" Wow!

a "beemer" with 3 tons on it cruising at 60 at 45 (m.p.g?)..that IS progress!..(hot damn!)
didn't know the germans were THAT smart!..what i DO know is they get "every dime"
for EVERYTHING they build!..now THAT IS fact!..they don't give nothin' away!..just sayin!

The 335d weighs 3781lb. Compare to the Malibu (3421lb), Mustang (3653lb), Charger (4250lb).

BMW is very proud of that diesel engine. It's an $8000 option over the gasoline straight-6. It's somewhat nostalgic that all of BMW "sixes" are inline straight-6s.

Another gas mileage killer in automobiles is the 10% ethanol required by law to be added to gasoline. Ethanol has less energy potential than gasoline (ethanol has 84,000 BTUs per gallon, gasoline 114,000 BTUs). Although ethanol has higher octane (resistance to pre-ignition due to heat generated during compression), this attribute can only be utilized in higher compression engines. Ethanol doesn’t atomize as well and just doesn’t get the gas mileage that 100% gasoline offers. Also, now that farmers receive subsidies for growing corn and other feed stocks to produce ethanol, they grow less food crops, which reduces the supply of food and cause prices to increase. This is what happens when the government decides to regulate economically unfeasible requirements into the free market economy without looking at the Big Picture: less efficient fuel, higher fuel prices and higher food prices. (Farmers must be BIG political contributers...)

Happy Driving,

Wally

Ugh-oh, here we go again...
Re: off topic sorta
March 13, 2011 05:43PM
When we raced modifeds, we ran Alcohol and the engine would consume twice as much volume of Alcohol over Cam2 racing fuel. It only makes sense that adding ethanol to our fuel would reduce fuel mileage.

This entire oil crisis thing is a total SCAM !!!......We have more oil in this country than ANYWHERE in the world .....The rich want ALL the oil , not just most of it !!......Do you really think that these politicians didn't see thing coming ? ...... You're more naive than anything if you think that way ....These politicians are sleeping with every oil comany in American and more !!....The Oil companies and the politicians continue to get rich off of us fools that bust our A$$e$ trying to go to work everyday to support their habbits !!...... WAKE UP !!!...... We as Americans are allowing all this to happen because we cannot unite on ONE SIMPLE ITEM !!.....They keep us fighting one against the other , and THEY WIN , WE LOOSE !!!....... These same companies and politicians got richer off of the Viet Nam war !!......Why do you think it continued as long as it did ? ....... Do you really think we were fighting Communism ? ...... The rich get richer from our struggles and we fight their battles ...... Nixon got impeached !!....Big Deal !!.....Did he go to jail ? NO !!!......He paved the way for the rich man to get richer and then took the fall for it all and got paid protection and a full PENSION to boot !!!..... IT"S ALL A SCAM !!!....... We're all nothing more than peasants working for the WEALTHY who have the politicians doing all the dirty work for them with their new laws and taxes !!......DON"T KID YOURSELF !!..... What we have in this country is still better than other countries , but let's get real .....This is no democracy !!.....The onlty thing that is democratic is that we have a 2 party system to keep us at each others throats so the politicians and the rich can flourish !!......Jim

Luxury car getting excellent gas milage, who does that help?
If you are rich enough to buy a luxury car then you will not likely be worried
about how much gas costs.
Same for hybrids, if it is not at a price the average can afford, it is a waste.
There is no alternative to fossil fuel, cost effective that is.
There is plenty of oil in the ground but the tree huggers, global warming idiots
Gov regulations, stupid over-protective preaching of saving the planet.
People tend to believe something if they hear 'scientists say".
Science that is not empirical is not science.
These who claim they want to 'save" the planet have a hidden agenda.
And this will lower the standard of living for Americans.
Even if there is global warming they are guessing at what is causing it.
Doesn't methane cause injury to the environment?
So mowing grass and cows shi@@ing in the pasture will cause global warming
Believe what you want and I will believe what I want.
I am old enough to know better concerning this preaching of global warming.
I know better than to blindly believe something just because a scientist
says so.
And I definitely know better than to believe something just because politicians
and news agencies say so.
We are not running out of fossil fuels.

I STRONGLY RECOMMEND ALL TO CLICK ON THIS LINK, ANY AND ALL WHO USE FOSSIL FUELS SHOULD CLEARLY PUT THE BLAME ON THOSE WHO MANIPULATE THE MARKET IN COMMODITY CONTRACTS OF OIL. THERE IS NO REASON OUR ENTIRE COUNTRY SHOULD BE HELD HOSTAGE TO A FEW WITH MONEY. IT SEEMS THOSE WHO ARE RESPONSIBLE HIDE BEHIND EVERY
POSSIBLE SCAPEGOAT (LIBYA, OIL COMPANIES ETC.) WHEN THE REAL CULPRITS ARE LAUGHING AT OUR STUPIDITY.

SOMEBODY MUST BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE AND STOPPED.

True. Kinda hard though to ignore it all when gas/all fuel prices have a direct connection connection to nearly everything we buy, including metal detectors.

Here is a car related story for you. Most people think of Bob Lazar as the UFO guy but he is a smart guy. Here is another reason to supress hydrogen in a form we can all make for free. Why aren't wwe making these cars?? Money is always the answer

Re: off topic sorta
March 14, 2011 08:14PM
Coinnut, they have those cars, it's the hydrogen stations they don't have, it took years to put a gas station on every corner, when oil get so high we can't afford it, business men will invest, supply and demand runs the market
Re: off topic sorta

Supply and demand USE to run the market !!!......The rich that keep the politicians in office run the market !!.......and you can send THAT to FindMall too !!.....Jim

Yeah, Honda, Toyota and probably Ford have been testing then for a while. But Bob Lazar's car allows you to charge it at home (for free if you have solar or wind). Not what big business wants to hear lol.
