Must be horse related??

It's HUGE!

No way a man wore this thing - it's 4 inches long and 2 & 3/4ths wide so if it's only "1/2" of a buckle - it's gotta be horse related! lol

I ve dug those before...

Im pretty sure there cinch buckles...

what happened was another buckle had a loop on it and you hung it it the hanger on your piece..then you pulled a leather strap through it and tightened it all down togther...

one of those chinese puzzle devices...if you did nto Know how it worked and soemone handed it to you it would no make sense...

Ive seen variations and there still a style liekt hat today yet smaller...

pretty sure though yours would probably date to the late 1800's or so..

Civil war period did not have such that Im aware of... the ones i ve found come out of turn of the century farm sites....never encounetred one in a Civil war Cavalry camp..

Mr Southern, our resident artifact expert. : )

I knew you'd know what that was. I figured some kinda strap went through that loop...

Thanks Keith - I figured you'd most likely know what it is :-)

Diggin a field where a house sat from the 1860s thru the 1920s
according to all I've been finding. Will post the whole lot when I
finish with the place.

Thanks everyone and
