Swimming in an Alpine lake on a warm August day has many allures, but for a German teenager it fortuitously became the best investment decision in her young life.

The teenage girl from Germany, who remains anonymous, last summer found a gold bar at the bottom of the lake and quickly surrendered the treasure to the police in Berchtesgaden, Germany.

The authorities began a monthslong search for a rightful owner, but after six months could not find anybody, according to news reports. On Thursday, they announced that the girl and her family can keep the bar, which at 17.6 ounces is worth about $20,000.

The last time gold bars made news was in early 2015, when two amateur treasure hunters Piotr Koper, from Poland, and Andreas Richter, from Germany, through their attorneys claimed they found the location of a Nazi train full of gold and gems in Poland.

In December, Polish scientists, who were charged with investigating the site, announced that they could find no evidence of the train’s existence.

Finding a half-kilo gold bar is a great investment, but investing in gold has been a losing proposition for nearly five years so far.

Gold futures GCJ6, +1.43% on Friday were down 0.7% at $1,150 an ounce.

Gold prices peaked at about $1,900 an ounce in 2011 and steadily declined ever since. Though lately, the shiny metal has found some of its luster.

Prices gained more than 5% since the start of the year with analysts saying the momentum is likely due to a fall in the dollar and fears of a recession.

BERLIN – A teenager in Germany can keep a 500-gram (17.6-ounce) bar of gold that she found in an Alpine lake last year and handed in to police.

Police in Berchtesgaden on Thursday confirmed a report in Munich daily tz that authorities had been unable to find an owner for the bar, news agency dpa said. That means that, six months after the find, the 16-year-old girl who found it gets to keep it. The bar is worth about $20,000.

The girl, who hasn't been identified, was on vacation at the Koenigssee lake in Germany's southeastern corner at the time of the find in August. She found it around 2 meters (6½ feet) under the surface.

It's still not clear how the bar ended up in the lake.

The gold bar found in a lake near Hitler’s summer home in Bavaria is worth $20,000, and the German teenager who found the treasure gets to keep it. While the teen is happy about the unusual find, the gold bar sparked a renewed search for Hitler’s hidden treasures.

Thursday’s announcement that the German girl gets to keep the gold bar after no one has come forward to claim it, is accompanied by the disappointing news that there are no further hidden treasures in the lake according to a February 4 BBC report. “The find revived rumours of Nazi gold supposedly lost in the lake, near Germany's southern border with Austria, but reports said the find was not connected to the Nazi era.”

The 16-year-old teen was swimming in Lake Koenig last August when she found the gold bar at the bottom of the lake less than two miles (three kilometers) from Berghof, which was Hitler’s summer residence and where he spent much of his time during World War II. The gold bar was found at a depth of about 6.5 feet (2 meters) and weighed about one pound (500 grams). The value of the item is estimated to be around $18,000 to $20,000 depending on what the value of gold is and the exchange rate of Euros.

Immediately after her treasure find, the girl reported it to the Bavarian police who began an investigation. According to German law, an owner of an item can claim his lost property. However, if the owner does not come forward after six months, the finder gets to keep it.

“Rumours have swirled for decades about a stash of gold hidden by the Nazis at the bottom of a Bavarian lake, and Lake König has always been regarded as a likely candidate,” reports die Welt.

The fact that the bar’s identity number had been partially scratched off and that divers could find no other evidence of any hidden Hitler treasure in the lake seems to indicate that this was a once in a lifetime rare find and that it was not associated with any Nazi treasure. According to a spokesperson for the Berchtesgaden police, the gold bar was produced after 1945. After an intense six-month investigation, no one came forward to claim the lost treasure and the 16-year-old German teen got to keep the gold bar she had found in the lake.
