Is there a standard alternative target to determine the gold sensitivity of a detector? BBs? lead pellets? Or, is it just gold...

Lead works good.
Cut up some fishing sinkers to different sizes and thinknesses for testing.

Steve Herschbach turned me on to a test target..

a Bic pen ..one of those white barrel type..the tip is metallic

Yea! I remember that now. I think the little ball in the tip is metallic.

And don't hold test targets in hand on high gain, high frequency machines as they will often sound off on your empty hand.

I use some tiny Tungsten discs and shot for tweaking Pinewood Derby cars. The weight of Tungsten is closer to Gold than Lead.

The Conductivity and the resistance need to be similar to Gold in order to get the similar results.

Buy the right VLF and you will be surprized just at what the can see.

Being a coin hunter remember reading two nickles taped together but imagine that would be for larger nuggets....
