My friend has a big foot coil with the black box. Took the cap off and nothing there but a solid, filled to the top, wax type material...Any idea what goes...

There should be a small "U" shaped jumper in there. IF not, it's possible someone at sometime potted (filled) the little box. You could carefully remove the wax to get to the jumper.

The one I have the little u that you can see when the top is off. Two little gold points stick up.
