Guessing Game -- Winner Announced

That makes Dave_E the winner if I didn't overlook anybody that was closer. He guessed 351.

I weighed them on bathroom scales and came out to 24.4 lbs on it. Those jokers add up when you dig 30 and 40 a trip. In the picture, I put them in piles of 10.

There's really no telling how many bullets have came out of that place. Most of those are from the bullet spot. We are hunting it to death before it gets turned into the subdivision.

If I'm not mistaken, that's about the 4th container like that, that I've filled with bullets from there, plus the ones that my buddies and other people have found out of there. I would say at least a few thousand bullets have came from those fields. It has been a great detector testing site the past 12 years or so. I hate to see it destroyed.

Actually its not a battle site at all. It was either a firing range or just an emptying spot for their muskets. They were winter camped not far from this spot, with winter huts. Anytime you get near a winter camp you'll run into spots like this, as loaded guns weren't allowed in camp. Any time they went out on a march or came back from picket duty, they would have to either shoot to empty the rifle or pull the bullet. Easier to just shoot em. In this case it was the entire Army of the Cumberland 4th Corps camped there. The best I can come up with, that was around 14,000 soldiers. There are other smaller spots in the area that give up clumps of fired bullets. The one I call the bullet field is by far the largest I have personally found. The other theory is that one of the local guys found records of them being issued new rifles prior to the Atlanta campaign, and that maybe they were drilling a lot in anticipation for what was to come. We'll never know for sure.
