Of course the IRS will want their "fair share"!! Capital gains at least. The real question is how do you determine your cost basis? I would right off the purchase of the entire farm it was found on as well as all the expenses necessary to maintain the tractor that turned the hoard up in the cornfield.

Yep IRS will always get theirs. You can not even sell your own stuff on eBay over 600.00 without getting a 1099. I mean why should I have to pay taxes on something twice never got that unless you have a receipt showing you did not make a profit on it. But who has a receipt on a collectable you bought 20 years ago?

IRS aside...If that was found here, in NY, it would all be taken by the state, as all gold found on land within the state's borders belongs to the state...imagine that.

That is another reason to keep your mouth shut but today every one wants to be an internet or YouTube hero. I know I will get the grumpy old man routine but that stuff will bite you in the arse.

If I found it or something like it, nobody would ever know about it. There might be signs of it...like I might just show up one day with a brand new truck.

It would be pretty tough to peddle some of those coins on the QT , they're just too rare and valuable. If you sold enough to buy a new truck an armed IRS agent would probably be waiting for you at your door step when you got home. If that's true about New York I would transport and make "arrangements" to have them found else where. Trying to sell these on the hush would probably require selling for half what they bring at auction so it might be better to do things on the up and up after keeping a few pocket fulls of the common stuff undiscovered.
