NINETY SIX, South Carolina: Ninety Six National Historic Site will be hosting their biannual special event, Lifeways of the Cherokee Indians and Colonial Settlers, on Saturday, April 14 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and on Sunday, April 15 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Uncover American roots at Ninety Six National Historic Site by entering the lives of native Cherokees who lived in the area for over a thousand years and the rugged early settlers in the 1750s-1760s.

Ninety Six National Historic Site went to great lengths to incorporate new programs and tours to this event and expects an educational yet fun-filled weekend to be experienced by all. From the casual stroller to the history buff, there is something for everyone at Old Ninety Six. Superintendent John Slaughter encourages all to "Come join us in this 'History Discovery Event' where you can explore, discover, and interact with characters and stories that are intertwined with the park's history."

In partnership with Pickens County Historical Society, Preston Bruce will present a discussion of Fort Prince George and its relationship to other early fortifications in the backcountry which protected settlers from Cherokee. An exact model of Fort Prince George will be on display in the visitor center during the event. Throughout the weekend, a prehistoric weapons expert will demonstrate how Native Americans used weapons such as the blowgun and the atlatl. Dr. Will Moreau Goins, CEO of the Eastern Cherokee, Southern Iroquois and United Tribes of South Carolina, Inc., will tell the story of Cherokee Indians in South Carolina on Saturday at 1:00 pm. Join a walking tour of the Gouedy Trail to learn about Robert Gouedy, his trading post, and the Indian attacks on Fort Ninety Six in 1760, also a new addition to the event.

Event favorites have also returned to Ninety Six such as Faire Wynds- an 18th Century Circus, Cherokee Peace Chief Attakullakulla, and trader Robert Gouedy. Listen to the same music that colonists would have heard; smell the food cooking that settlers and natives would have eaten; and see how the weapons of the colonists and Cherokee worked during swivel gun and musket demonstrations. For the young and old alike, make your own sack, pocket, or cornhusk doll at the kids’ activity station. Play games that colonial children would have played. Living historians will be demonstrating various skills and trades in the encampment area near the Black Swan Tavern.

The park also offers a museum with historical artifacts, a movie “Ninety Six: Crossroads of a Revolution,” and a bookstore, all located in the visitors center. The event is open to the public and all activities are free.

Ninety Six National Historic Site is home to battlefields from the French and Indian War and Revolutionary War and much more. The park is located 2 miles south of the town of Ninety Six on Highway 248. For additional information, visit www.nps.gov/nisi/index.htm or call (864) 543-4068.

In case of inclement weather, some activities may be cancelled.
