Anyone ever use like say an old compass or an old tr machine on iron littered sites. or what is a good detector for ignoring square nails for under 8 hundred dollars

You may want to look at a Teknetics G2 or Garrett AT-Pro. The old TR units in iron infested sites may be fairly 'quiet'...... but....... are being masked quite badly.
