Berkeley - A James River Plantation

Just finishing up a vacation in Williamsburg, VA and highly recommend to anyone a visit to the Berkeley Plantation off Route 5. The property dates back to 1619, the house to 1726, and the entire Army of the Potomac (140,000 troops) stayed on the grounds when McClellan took over the plantation in 1862.

In the basement are cabinets full of finds dug from the property during the 80's/90's from an old guy who was allowed to hunt the grounds using a metal detector. I can only imagine what is still left to be found using a modern machine placed in capable hands. In fact, if I lived in the area, I'd spend a considerable amount of effort to gain permission to hunt those grounds anew and fill some new cabinets.

I highly recommend visiting this plantation if you are in the area.
