Digger wars....
June 12, 2013 10:44AM
Lets see how this show pans out tonight. [www.findmall.com] Some pretty good names doing this show. I know the last one Ron did in England was top notch in my book. Now if they can keep it down to earth.... with out the back hoes and comical running around like a chicken with its head cut off we may have a winner. Just keep it real Ron.

Why watch detecting on TV when you can go outside and and do it yourself?

Detecting doesn't belong on television for all to see. There is plenty on YouTube if anyone wants to watch it.

The last thing this hobby needs is promotion. There are a lot of people out there with the delusion that anyone can just go out and find artifacts and it's ruining the hobby because too many refuse to follow the rules. They go out and buy a detector and start digging holes everywhere and anywhere. After a year or two of finding nothing of value, they give up, never realizing or caring about the black eye they gave to the hobby. All because they saw a show on TV.

Not only that but many other people will watch the show and not approve of what the show depicts. Out of ignorance they will see it as destructive and say it should all be banned everywhere. Again, all because they saw a show on TV.

Don't watch the shows. Try to see the bigger picture of how detecting shows aimed at the general public are very bad for our hobby.

In any case its your call to watch or not but Badger brings up some good points.
Several days ago I visited a small local park that gives up some silver and it looked like someone went crazy with a digger giving us all a black eye.
Spent some time trying to tidy up the holes and left not wanting to be accused. Unfortunately only takes one to ruin it on all of us.
Hopefully this will be a better production and give the public a better idea of the hobby.

Maybe if the producers keep it real, people would see it as a lot of work, many times digging a lot of trash just for one good target . That might keep people out of the hobby(we all go through dry spells). It's kind of a double edged sword, less people in the hobby means less sales of equipment which in turn takes away dollars needed to further the development of new equipment. More people out there digging equates to more unfilled holes and irresponsible behavior.

If you don’t dig it, then how are you going to know what you’re missing!
How can you have your pudding if you don’t eat your meat!

Have no fear--it will fail--no cleavage , no ratings , no success.
Digging trash doesn't sell air time.

Who wants to watch anyone dig trash? So therefore everyone who watches will believe they have amazing treasure buried on their properties. Which in turn leads to our hobby being stamped into oblivion. If you were a landowner with an older property and watched one of these shows would you let some stranger come in with digging tools and a metal detector? I know I wouldn't and I'm an easygoing person. Also when someone in the government sees this type of video they will decide that they don't want folks detecting in the parks due to the ground disturbance caused by digging. A quick buck to be made for those involved and a severe black eye for the hobby that will last for generations will be the end result. Regardless of how well these shows are orchestrated the end result will be the same. The funny thing is these shows are entertaining and I've watched a few. I just have this sinking feeling that these shows appeal to many who don't hold ethical metal detecting standards and will ultimately do much more harm than good for this hobby. JMO

Let me first say we arent talking about some back ward hicks. These guys are highly respected hunters and i expect ChicagoRon to keep it real and interesting. Everyone complained about the last couple as being .... shall we say less than the real deal. As far as getting out.... well im out 6 or 7 days a week so setting in front of the TV for these shows and not having to do the digging works for me......if its a good one. Ive always enjoyed finding old thing which is the reason i was an antique dealer and love detecting. You aint going to wish away the growth of this hobby especially with hard times the way they are. There are always those rotten apples in every sport or hobby or those that just plain dont know what they are doing.

The rotten apples are the ones making the shows and the sell-outs who star in them.

I've been watching Ron's videos for years and most of us know what a celebrity Larry is.

I'd love to watch the show online but there is absolutely nothing good about it being on TV. It's obvious the people involved with the show don't care about the future of the hobby. It's all about short term promotion and sales at any cost for the detector companies and a bit of fame and fortune for the actors.

All we can do is hope no one watches. The sooner they are pulled from television, the better. I don't care how real it is.

I need more detectors, I saw how easy it is. You get rich in one day and have plenty of time to fool around. I know it's TV BUT.........

All the usual "reality" show staples edited predictably: contrived competition, grade-school trash talking and overacting by non-actors. On top of that, the thrill of someone finding cool stuff every minute or two. I'll bet Dig Wars will be a ratings success.

These detecting TV shows are no doubt profitable for the producers and the participants who also get to feed their egos by becoming "reality" show pseudo celebrities.

For the rest of us in the hobby who deal with the negative fallout, it's not a positive.

I do find this one somewhat more watchable than the previous detecting shows, and no question several of the participants are very experienced and skilled...but a gold-plated toilet is still a crapper.
