*NEW PICS* Can anyone ID this (found amongst CW-era relics)...

Hi all --

Does anyone have any idea what this item is (not the buttons). It was found amongst Civil War-era relics, and I have no idea what it might be. The Rifleman button is a small cuff button, to give you an idea of the size of the unknown object...

I sort of looks like some sort of latch but I guess I have no ideal lol. Nice find anyway. Someone here will know for sure though.

Hmm, never seen that piece before. Did you notice the tiny punch marks only on half the object? I can't tell if they're stars or zeros. Would you give us some other views, Steve?

OK, here are two additional pictures of this find.

The first one shows the item "opened."



The second shows the back.



There is some lettering on the back, it's hard to read. If you can see the arched lettering across the top, I think it says "EUREKA."

The lettering on the left side of the item says "PAT'D" and below it a number, I think "18".

The lettering on the right side says "OCT" and then a number, I think "31," and then below that another number that is hard to read, it may say "65." So Oct. 31, '65 maybe (presumably 1865?)

Its a clip from the Eureka vacuum patented on halloween 1865. It held the top of the bag closed. Just kidding. I don't know.

Keith -- I googled it, too, but I typed "Eureka Pat'd 18 Oct. 31 65." Didn't find it searching that way...

Now I see, though, that the "18" goes with the "65" -- if you consider PAT'D and OCT 31 as one line, and then the "18" on the left and the "65" on the right as being the second line, it reads PAT'D OCT 31 1865...

Anyway, THANKS for the help. Yeah, Michigan, good point. I am going back there in about a week...I will see if I can find it...
