Coin collectors...howd you like to find this?
December 21, 2014 01:59PM
this. While I was hunting last week I unearthed literally the rarest US silver coin of the 20th century. A 1901 S Barber Quarter!!!! VF/XF (details) with environmental damages and a few scratches. Yes... It's a crying shame its a "dug" coin... But hey... It's the find of a lifetime. There's no doubt in my mind about it's authenticity. The site it was found at, simply put, hasn't been touched since around 1920. I've also had several local dealers (one of which was a former PCGS grader) tell me it's genuine. I know either way it needs to be graded and slabbed, but what are your thoughts? Value? Grade? Where to sell? Thanks! Still spinning! Idaho! On the map!!!

Use PCGS or NGC to grade and slab it. I don't trust some if the other grading companies, but these two are good.

Find of a lifetime for sure!

PCGS or NGC most definitely or else don't even bother

current "book price" is anywhere from $22,500 to $31000 for VF/XF but you never get book price for any coin (same as you never get book for a car/truck, etc).

So realistically - if you were to sell a VF/XF 1901-s Barber quarter - you'd get 10 to 20% less than book at best ($16,500 to $26,500) or so depending on exact grade, where you sell, how good your salesmanship is, etc.

but

being that it's a "dug" coin which they will know when they "scope" it for authenticity and grading and then label it "environmentally damaged"

you can expect to lose approx. another 30% of value which will bring your sale price down to around $11,500 -- $18,500

Still not a bad day's diggin there!

Make sure you keep it a environmentally damaged coin. No cleaning especially with chemicals..... they now have coin sniffer..... you could get it back ungraded if you do.

I'd estimate value between $5000-$6000 after having it certified. This one sold for $4400 two years ago:

[coins.ha.com]

For environmentally damaged coins, as this one, ANACS is as good as PCGS or NGC. You want the coin proven genuine; that is the most important attribute. Plus you can submit directly rather than through a coin dealer. Then I'd eBay it or consign it through a major auction firm like Heritage. Either way the selling fee will be 13-15%.

Let us know what you do.

Oops, now I see you cut and paste. :-(

Hi,,, nice find Ray...LoL
Re: Coin collectors...howd you like to find this?

I said "VF/XF" but with environmental damage (see original post above)

he says it came back "XF Details" = which means they also labeled it as such = either Environmental damage with XF Details and/or "cleaned" too.

The only suggestion I would make to Dr.Tones (the finder)

is to reconsider where he's selling/listing it at because as GoRebels said = "eBay" is where he SHOULD list it --- he'd get a much better final sale price as the coin would be in front of a MUCH larger bidding audience.

It will be the difference of maybe 3 to 10 bidders bidding overall VS 50 to 100 or more on eBay

but = heck - what the hell do I know anyway!?

Coin has been stuck at $4550 for over a week with two days remaining in the auction. I'll enter the bidding fray late if it remains stuck. I thought $6000 was about the max this coin would fetch.

We'll know soon enough...
