My Makro racer doesnt seem to like -2 degrees of celsius
February 13, 2015 03:55PM
Well i got the Makro racer pro pack and i was testing the detector outside with the stock coil. Outside temperature was -2 degrees of celsius.

The detector will work normally for a few minutes and the sensitivity is at 70. After a while the alarm will start to sound and the display says saturation. Lowering the sensitivity to 69 will stop the alarm and the saturation message.

I have tested the detector inside for a while and it works normally there. Maybe the detector or coil is extra sensitive towards freezing temperatures???

This really worries me, as my Xp deus works normally in those temperatures.

That's around 28 degrees F....not too cold..and lowering it one point an alarm goes off...hmmm, head scratcher.

Yes, very strange behavior and i dont like this kind of "problem". sad smiley

I hope Dilek will have some kind of answer for this.

What kind of batteries are you using?
As temp drops so does voltage, it may be dropping down past what the voltage regulator is rated for?

DeepTech Vista X with 3 search coils.
Works for me

The Varta rechargeables supplied with the detector. I will let the detector stay outside for 10 minutes before powering it up again and see if that solves the "problem". smiling smiley

Well, 10 minutes didnt do anything, after powering the machine..the display says saturation instantly and goes away, if sensitivity is 69.

Everything seems to be working normally, if you do not go above 69 sensitivity..very strange behavior.

Hi,,,It's obviously a low battery issue, keep in mind that rechargeable batteries operate at a reduced voltage right from get go....Furthermore most all electronic components have a minimum & maximum operating temperature....If you still want to test some more, you should use Alkaline batteries and possibly a heated boot to go over the control housing....This sounds like a perfectly normal operation....I used some of my machines around the 30 degree mark and they showed degraded signs or issues too.....I do have a problem with my Racer too,,,,I put it in the oven at 350 for 10 minutes and it started melt....LoL.....JJ

Tested the machine with GP Recyko+ rechargeables and the same thing happens, if sens. goes above 69..the machine goes nuts.smiling smiley

I think the boys and the girls in the factory should be informed about this issue?

Hi,,,Before informing the boys and the girls in the factory about this issue....Try alkaline batteries and report back.........JJ

Already reported to the factory about my discovery, as i like them to fix any issues as soon as possible and i normally dont use alkalines, as i have not had any issues with any other metal detectors i have owned in the past.

Hi,,,The reason I said to try alkaline batteries was to help the boys and the girls in the factory....This way they will be able to determine if the machines at fault or the batteries........JJ

If i dont find any alkalines inside the house, i will go and buy some. New test will be conducted with alkaline batteries tomorrow,ok.smiling smiley

Leave the detector outside for 1 hour without batteries at 28 degrees F. Keep a new set of alkaline inside house and warm. After the 1 hour install batteries and check. This eliminates batteries entirely. And if the detector does act up, take it in the house and see how long it takes until it starts working correctly.

Ok, i will go and buy batteries right now from the gas station and then test.

Hi,,,,The manual states this below, check this out and report back.........JJ

Targets which are near the surface may give multiple different signals to the device. If you
suspect a target near the surface, lift the search coil and swing it more slowly until a single signal
is received. Also, if there is a large target near the surface it may cause an overload in the search
coil and the device starts to generate a continuous sound which resembles a siren. “Saturation”
message is shown on the display simultaneously. In such a case, lift the search coil up until the
message disappears.

And since I have a FORS CoRe unit and it supposed to be bone chilling cold here tonite, I will check it as well and report back what I see.

There is no large targets below the gravel road and the machine will go nuts, when coil is pointed up in the air.

Re: My Makro racer doesnt seem to like -2 degrees of celsius

Etsija82,
When you check your detector as I've mentioned, be sure while leaving sensitivity at 70 in 2 tone, if machine acts up with coil in air, go to 3 tone and see how it does. If it seems good in 3 tone at 70 sensitivity try raising sens while remaining in 3 tone and see what happens. And then go back to 2 tone and check it at various sensitivity settings. Also go to the other modes, COG and General and check as well. Ensure coil remains in the air while monitoring. If faulty leave detector outside and change coils. Might want to leave the small coil inside and keep it warm, but change it out on the outside so the detector don't warm up any. I will do the same as above with CoRe unit.

Hi,,,It's 40° in Turkey right now it sure seems like they could duplicate the condition you are having....It gets cold there too....Another thing that's a possibility would be the regulator in the machine, doubtful but possible....JJ
Re: My Makro racer doesnt seem to like -2 degrees of celsius

This could be a machine specific problem. And it could be a affects all Racer units and or CoRe units too. We'll know more in a few hours.

Ok, fresh supply of alkalines and the machine is outside for 1 hour and then it is testing time..smiling smiley

It doent matter what settings i change, when the saturation is in effect. Every setting works after lowering sens to 69.
