Watch those Ears on the Stock Racer Coil

I was holding the ears of the coil to pull off the coil cover and squeezed just a little too hard and cracked an ear. I emailed metaldetector.com and told them my sad story. I'll let you know how things work out. The ears on the small coil are much thicker.

I have decided to just leave my coil cover off. If I damage because of this and it affects operation, oh well. I''ll just buy another coil. IMO the coil cover is a little bit too thick. Racer coil cover looks a whooooooooole lot thicker than my CTX's stock coil cover. And a lot stiffer too!!!

Speaking of coil covers, the Racer actually FEELS heavier with the cover on. I just use it without it. I'll keep the cover in case I ever sell but right now, I am thinking that the Racer fills several niches for my style of hunting. I WOULD like to try the large coil at some point.....I mean the LARGE coil.

Read your topic just before going out with my Makro racer....One of the stock coil ears just cracked in my first farmers field trip. When i tried to take the coil cover off, when trying to think why the 2 tones saturates in sensitivity of 70, the coil bolt snapped and when i got home and inspected the coil, i found this terrible crack in one of the coil ears. Stock coil ears are too thin, damages much too easy.

Has to be a manufacturers problem I would think..hope they replace it....

I have the large coil and that also has thicker ears. I heard nothing back from metaldetector.com regarding my email. I will call them tomorrow if I get a chance. I am willing to pay an equal share to have the coil replaced. But as a good poster in here already stated I think my coil cover days are over for the stock coil. We two with cracked ears are the beginning of a problem.

For those with cracked coil ears. Where did they crack??? I've look at the ears on my coil. I'm guessing they cracked down where the ear meets the coil. I would highly recommend Makro to make a less rigid stock coil cover, a cover that attaches easy, with not much prying or twisting, but a cover that stays attached. I would like to see ears like on the small OOR 5" coil. I also think they should consider having a longer coil bolt too. A strong coil bolt. Maybe consider using a commercially already available bolt/nut. I don't care what color. Black or off white would do.

Right ear. Starting from the lower back, where the ears meets the coil towards the center of the hole. Not a happy customer right now, as this clearly a design or a material weakness of both. Things should not break, when simply trying to take the coil cover off for inspecting.sad smiley

Take a look at a product call BONDIC..... this may be a way to repair or strengthen an area. As far as a heavy made coil cover wished we had those on the Xcal. $35 a pop for those cheaply made things.

Feel the same way about the coil cover on my F75. The tabs are stiff and hard to get past edge of coil at the same time.

Well I finally got around to calling the US distributor for Makro at metaldetector.com. All I can say is WOW. I am more than pleased the way I was treated. New coil will be in the mail very soon. Thank you Makro and metaldetector.com. Very classy indeed.
