Salute to the guests
April 26, 2015 01:23AM
As I type this I notice this forum is only 10 guests under the record total that was achieved not too long ago. I think that is a good thing and shows that people are still interested in forums although I believe the number of posters are down. I don't know if the number of posts are down here but I know they are on the other major forums. So even if someone doesn't feel like coming here and telling me what a great guy I am or telling me what a schmuck I am it is good to see that people are paying attention. I've always had faith in the people that view forums. I know when I see those numbers you are coming here to see people like me. And if not "na na nuh nana" you can't get rid of me. Here is a little token of my appreciation----

A person can't get the views they get on a forum on places like Facebook. They can get (or make it look) like they want but a forum is more real.

If I were only on Facebook and went missing, hardly anyone would notice, but when I go missing from a forum this is what happens (from the web)-----There are a few others as well... like Kemper... that are "noticeably" ... "gone".
Yeah right. Where'd Kemper go? Here he was posting like 5k posts over 6 months then boom. Gone.

And from another site on the web--I say let him back on the forum. Always was good reading

Are the authority on these sites doing what is in the best interest of these sites or are they letting their personal views override facts ? Whatever it means I'm sure the egotistical Ahole factor plays a part somewhere.

If I "DEFINITELY" have a problem as you stated then you would have to know what that problem is for your statement to be true. Feel free to share. To answer your questions ,I am 58 and I would have to grow up to in order to give a fair answer to the latter. As of now I would say that recently some may have tried to deprive me of attention but I think the opposite happened. I don't see that as my problem but it does seem to be one. Good points,Lad.

It's likely to be 'bots' , not real users. The technical metal detecting forum Geotech1.com had a lot of problems with 'guests', and a couple of years ago changed to 'registered users only'. Now, there's typically 20 users online, compared to many hundreds (of guests) previously. And according to the site's stats, over 40000 users have been automatically denied registration in those two or three years.

Well Kemper, As I said before I enjoy your post. A forum about detecting or what ever can't always be 100% Detecting post or it will get old at least to me. I always like the pot stirred a little. JMHO.

The tech forum on that site has had 0 posts in the last 365 days. It looks like Carl has put a lot a work into the site and it is very technical and looks very professional and I don't think anybody really gives a !!!!. In comparison My puppy dog and I could pull 4 pages of comments in a short period of time and my puppy swings a vintage radio shack stick. The last real test was against the drama queen over at another forum who everybody said could get 3 pages if she posted herself with a pull tab. She should have easily have gotten the 3 pages as she is as attractive as can be even with that new hair-don't. I know I made numerous comments on the thread but some of those that said it could be done were nowhere in site when it came time for them to back up their claims.

So,I don't know what kind of statistic
"... over 40000 users
> have been automatically denied registration in
> those two or three years." is in reality but I'm thinking the automatically part means they were denied whether or not they had any intentions of actually registering. Which is a BS stat that says very little. I do know that when a person takes the time to look up the real numbers and actual facts about various sites they will have a clearer picture of the reality of what is going on. I think guest do that.

I have a question and a observation Kemper, if you were so good at bringing others to forums then why don't these forums that banned you take you back with open arms? What I think is you disrupted the flow of these forums, gave them more work than they wanted to deal with, so the easy way out was to get rid of the disrupting influence.

Maybe you should do what most of us do who are in the hobby do, go out hunting every chance we get instead of sitting on the internet trying to make sense of it all.

You make some good points. Such questions could certainly be answered by those that did the banning. I do agree with you that they may have taken the easy way out. In areas concerning metal detecting that almost invariably is the wrong thing to do. In reference to the latter part of your comment I will say that I do spend as much time as I wish detecting and have shown many of my finds although they are only a small portion of the items I have found. I do not try to make sense of it all as I think a lot of it speaks for itself and it is not that difficult for me to understand what is going on.

The people viewing (guests) may want to know what is going on. They will not see that if a few people are controlling what remains posted and booting people out that don't fit into what they want the "flow' of sites to look like. I am not afraid of the reality as I think it is more fun and is what people in general really want. I may or may not fit into what these metal detecting sites are or what they are becoming. That could be a reason for putting me out. That does not necessarily make me "odd" man out.
Re: Salute to the guests

I'm not sure where the "The tech forum on that site has had 0 posts in the last 365 days" came from, are you a registered user? It's had 15 posts today, which is in keeping with the fairly low number of active members. I guess they're busy either detecting, soldering, glueing or carefully counting turns of magnet wire.
And this is how the 41198 spammers were stopped, if this is correct:
I recall that at the time the site was changed to 'registered only', a lot of the visitors were from obscure countries, and two or three featured heavily. Which is taken to mean they weren't actually from those countries, they just 'spoofed' that identity.

Also, the topic of 'guests' came up on another forum I use. It seems that a fair number were actually members, but they weren't logged in, for computer-related reasons [browsing while at work; computer set to not remember login details; etc], I sometimes look at this forum when not logged in, eg. when I've cleared cookies out, and I'll only log in if I want to post.

Thanks Harold. Detecting is also about detecting people. Thanks for the encouragement. Now I have another person to blame.

That's what shows up because you are VISITING - register and you see stuff - Carl's Forum - Carl's rules.

OK, I've just logged out of Geotech1, and yes, if you're not registered (and signed in), you do see a rather meaningless message about zero posts on all the sub-forums apart from Geophysics and Sidescan sonar (for some reason?):
However, if you log in, this statistic disappears, and you can see in the "Tech Forum" sub-category there have been three threads active today. I've made 3 posts on that sub-forum this week myself, advising a newbie on how to test LED's.

This thread is about guests to metal detecting sites. I am not debating Carl's Forum or complaining about his rules as they pertain to registered users.

I said the following--"Detecting is also about detecting people." If I see a detector scanning a field by itself I'll look a little closer.

Kemper I have a couple of questions

1. What state are you located in?
2. Are you married?
3. Do you have children?
4. What other hobbies do you have?
5. How long have you been metal detecting?
6. Are you retired?

Thanks and your post on topic shows what I stated. I too wonder why they show zero posts.

People who suffer from HPD are sometimes accused of being a "drama queen" or "drama major". They are the people who grab the microphone, hog the limelight, always change the subject to themselves, behave outrageously, have tantrums and generally refuse to be ignored.

Okay to stay on topic here, I can't believe more of you guests don't post. I mean look how nice us posters are treated. Don't it just make you feel like jumping in ? Anyway, before you do I think you should know there could be a price to pay. Once you get past the "nice finds" area it can get a little strange--

There seems to be a problem here.

At first I was confused and perhaps a bit interested.

Then I got frustrated with the odd nature of the posts.

Now it is clear that his intentions are malicious. He apparently has figured out that not all the guests on forums are nice, curious, somewhat shy folks - but that some of them seem to be willing to take delight in participating in Mr. K's wierd games.

Please don't feed this troll, it's not nice. PM to Forum owner sent.

I don't think you should be taking a swipe at the guests or me but I am not surprised. If you have any questions of me that are on topic of the posts I will try to answer them. That may be a different route than the name calling and accusations you seem to enjoy but your method may win if you consider this a "game" as you put it.

This will link you to Mr. k's first post, related to when he posted an Ace 250 on ebay for a hair under $2000.

Then there was the Knitting Forum he joined because somebody on another Metal detector forum thoughtlessly suggested that if he didn't like metal detecting, ne should take up knitting. Result - a lot of confused nice ladies (and maybe guys).
