Certainly all detectors have their weak and strong points and well some guys are just more proficient in their operation. In any case whatever works...

Yes I think that there are some that really understand what the detector is telling them even if it is a dirty tone and some don't get it...

Detectors are different. Add to this people are different. Peoples hearing is different. Headphones are different. In ground targets read different. EMI can cause a difference. Soil mineralization cause a difference. Soil moisture levels can cause a difference. Even 2 like detectors with same like sized coils can cause a difference. Now, roll all these potential differences into detecting in general. This is why there are so many different opinions about brand x model y detector vs others. I will say though internet and video has helped more folks see a detectors capabilities more so without having to purchase. Before internet all you really could do is hope you knew someone with brand x model y detector or just trust the treasure magazines. We won't go there though.

I think that technique and experience accounts for about 75% of your chances of finding anything deeper than 6". The detector's capabilities that you are using accounts for very little.

I dont agree that the detector used accounts for very little on deep finds. It took me some time to LEARN the Explorer.... wasnt like id never used a machine before. Id dare say i got pretty good with it. Then the ET came out.... that learning curve changed for new buyers and people were doing better right out of the box. Most machines have their strong points, thats where research comes in, you need to have the right one for your intended use. If the machine accounted for very little..... we would be using single freq machines in the salt water surf, or slow recovery machines around old home sites or bad ground.... and there certainly wouldnt be so many VLFs and PIs. We wouldnt be excited about new machines coming out or hoping the next generation have certain features.

As far as field test go I know from personal experience they are proof read by the manufacturers and well they accentuate the good and downplay the bad...Just read one and buy the unit and you will know what I mean. All in all feel the tester give an accurate test but may be altered a tad before being published in a magazine...

Come on guys, how hard can this be? Just match the right machine to the right coil at the correct location. Add in a little experience, and BAM!..Magic!!! A hunt to remember. Guess I am not reading the stuff between the lines correctly often enough. LOL!!!

Ha, Dew....The concept IS simple. The least amount of times you hit a little ball until it goes into the designated hole, the smaller your score....smallest score wins...SIMPLE,.
The hard part is everything else. I can't think of a game that takes more practice to get half decent, than golf.

my father had this to say about the game of golf!
he could never understand how a perfectly "sane"
man could place a little white ball on the ground hit it ten miles
and then chase after it and hit another ten miles he was at odds with that!
can't begin to understand why!..ehe! he! he!..i'm just sayin'

Never played golf but the only sport I ever really cared about watching on TV was Pro Bowling. Its a game where you compete against yourself without any physical support from other team mates.
Golf is the same in that if you can't do it alone you can't do it period.
