Short CTX 3030 hunt 6-3-2015
June 03, 2015 09:35PM
Went to a large old home that was from the 1850's. A friend of mine was already hunting it when I showed up to see how he was doing. He then ask me if I wanted to hunt to. I just happened to have my CTX 3030 in my car so I figured why not. My friend had already found a wheat and a Mercury dime. I started hunting and at first was finding modern coins. They where from 2 to 4 inches deep. After digging a handful my first wheat was 6 inches so I knew I was going to need to start digging deeper targets to get to the older coins. Dug up 2 Mercury dimes at 6 to 8 inches. One was 1918 and the other was 1942. Then got some more wheat's in the 6 to 7 inch range. Then I had a loud solid signal at 6 inches that I believe VDI at 12- 3?. Not a 100% sure what the number was. Some where I think between 12-35 and 12-39. It ended up being a 18K solid gold wedding band. 6.8 dwt. My friend now wants to buy a CTX 3030 if his wife will let him. I told him that I have 2. He can use one to see how he likes using it first before he spends that kind of money. This place he was hunting is huge. The yard is at lest 2 or 3 acres. The families that have lived in this house over the past 150 years where very wealthy. I told him there is no telling what you will find in time. He said I am welcome to hunt with him any time. Can't wait to go again. It will take all summer to cover this place. Thanks, Kevin

What's the soil and emi like there, Kevin?
Sounds like you just hit the tip of the iceberg....the older coins are there...you know it and I know it....good luck!

The ground around this house is pretty mild. And there isn't a lot of iron to deal with. I was digging up some iron. But if you could see this place you would understand why I can't wait to go back. It's like a big white mansion with big pillars on the front and back of the house. It has a tennis court that was built way back. I found the mercury's around it. I will try get some picture of this place. Thanks

Nice diggin Kevin! Old coins, right up my alley. You just might be shocked at what a Turkish machine will find there after the CTX has covered it well.

Went back to the Mansion today. Took some pictures of the place so you can see where I will be hunting for the rest of the summer. Found a Indian head 1889 and 2 Roosevelt dimes. 1952 and 1959. My friend found a 1876 seated dime and a Roosevelt dime. We haven't begun to hunt this place. The owner did say it had been hunted before. Thanks, Kevin

Ozzie, I'm thinking of getting the 17 inch coil to cherry pick this place then start using the 11 inch coil again and then the 6 inch. I have been told about 4 Mansons on this same block and have permission to hunt 2 so far. I couldn't hunt all 4 in 2 summers. They are all from the 1850's to 1880's.

Ozzie, Found out some history about this place. This place has entertained governors, Generals, Senators and many
> troupes back during the civil war and up to
> present times. My mother in law said she has seen pictures of this place from back during the civil war era of troops camped out on this property. Also pictures taken with them all lined up for a group pictures. She is going to try find them so I can post them. At one time the property consisted of 40 acres. You know there has got to be relics and artifacts. Has a tennis court probably from
> the 20's or 30's. A lot of big gatherings have been hosted on this property and yes I hope to find gold coins and lots of silver and other older coins. Even some more gold jewelry. Thanks, Kevin

Well Kevin, I'm envious, jealous, grateful, and man there should be at least one really nice find at the site, surely. Wonder what it will turn out to be???? Looks like a great place for one to cut their teeth on a CTX!!!! Boy, would I like to spend about a week straight there. You may find an item of special historical importance as it relates to your state/country. Good luck, I'm rooting for you!!!!

Thanks David! I'm hoping me or my friend one finds something that will meet the WOW factor besides that heavy 18K band I found. My brother said the band was from the 1800's. Will let you all know if we come up with something else. Thanks, Kevin

I too....... believe that ring might be quite old.

----------------------------------

Let's see if this makes a statement (triggers thought). I would like to give you absolutely everything in that dirt..... from 0" - 13".
All I want...... are the targets ONLY in a one inch range,,,,,,,,,,,,,................,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, the targets from 13" - 14" depth strata.

If anyone of you had the chance to hunt this site how would you go about it if the detector you started out with was the CTX 3030? Would you start in the front or back or sides or even out away from the house? What size coils would you start and finish with? Anyone? Thanks

Kevin if you asked 20 folks, you'd probably get 20 answers. My thoughts. Run CTX with stock coil in combined mode. Try and see where the worst iron/nails are located and make a note. You could just dig the good TID targets at first (text book hits). Maybe start on the east and north sides of house. These generally were the coolest areas in the months when outside activity was plentiful. You might consider hunting in the shade as the day heats up. Try also hunting around the more monster sized trees. A small coil on the CTX, use it in the areas more laced with iron/nails/trash. You can also revert to small coil if you tire with the stock coil. Try to dig at least one deeper questionable target every outing. Pay attention to the depth of discovered coins, trash, nails. You can run your detector in fast recovery at first, then as the finds start winding down turn recovery fast off. As you continue ti hunt the site, higher manual sensitivity will be necessary to reach some of the fringe depth targets. Take your time, sweep correctly, listen to your detector. Me personally I would start digging anything that hit 28 or higher on the conductive #. I generally roam more at first when I get to a site I've never hunted. Just to get the feel of the ground minerals, iron/nails, the more bare areas, the worst areas. It will take a long time to hunt the site correctly, many times, different coils in spots, different machine settings, even different ground moisture levels, possibly different EMI levels. But all the talk about what to do may really not do much. Meaning put your coil to the soil.
Good luck.

That is the thing about detecting, you've got to walk over it,... to know what you're walking over :-)

So just fix up a coil, grab a digger and get going. You'll fine tune your approach to the site every visit after the first one.
In fact each visit after the initial recon will have you tweaking and adjusting this or that. You're simply getting to know the site better and better.

Went back to the Mansion Saturday for a 4 hour hunt. This time I used the 6 inch coil in a area that I used the 17 inch and 11 inch coil. Was able to pull out a 1849 large cent, 186? Shield nickel, 1910 D wheat and a large gold colored rnd. button with some kind of fancy design. Found a religious pendent with one of the saints on it. The button and pendent look to be very old to. Lots of iron in this area. The only coil I haven't tried is my 5 x10 Coiltek coil. Will post pictures soon. Thanks, Kevin

Will do tomorrow. There is still so much area that I haven't hunted yet on this Mansion site. Like I said before it will take one or two summers to cover. My friend Ed Huffman is coming to see me soon and wants to hunt with me for a day at this site. Hoping he will teach me how to get the most proformance out of my CTX. Thanks, Kevin

The problem i had with some of those older homes ...... was additions. When they added on a lot of the dirt was just spread out around the house. Ive seen some good buys on CTXs used with more or as much warranty as ETs new and dang near the price. The ones id avoid are those used in salt water ....... with no warranty left on them.
