Racer Meets Ghost Town - Round One grinning smiley

Hey all,

finally got out for some REAL diggin today,

crops are starting to come out of the fields now and so it's "game on"!

Had to try out the Racer in this site. I'll be hitting it a few more times this season after the farmer turns everything over.

This is the site I found the $1 Gold Piece in while using the Deus a couple fall seasons ago.

Have also used the CTX, F19, ATP, GBP, Etrac, and CZ6a in this site in previous seasons/years = it's the site that keeps on givin grinning smiley

Pics tell the story.

Thanks for looking and HH

Nice finds, very nice! I think that lock is really cool how old do you suppose it is.

Not exactly sure on the age of the lock SkiWhiz

the 4 corners ghost town was est. in the 1840s and stood until the 1940s when it was demolished after WWII

my guess would be somewhere around that era on the lock from the looks of it.

Nice assortment of relic-y things. Why the small coil? Just trying to make that little field last a while?

Using the little coil due to the extreme amount of iron content in the ground Wayne

there was a Brothel, Gen store and a Blacksmith shop all on this corner

you can't move 1 inch without iron sounding off in your ear/s --- very tough site to hunt/sift though

it'd be nice if the Racer had an "iron volume control" like the F19 does --- I don't like to tune it completely out but it'd be nice to tone it down a bit

Nice finds is the iron so bad you can't use the 5x10?

Had that revelation today, Wayne, while I was at an old house. Remembered you said ghost town and thought there must be a lot of iron there. So is the whole field in play there, or just a portion of it?
If you have a detector where you can turn the iron volume down, and have a small coil for it, that might give you another way of searching there.
Great looking spot. I love field hunting!

ps Did you ever visit the general store or blacksmith shop? <g>

I don't know about you Keith but I feel Shield Nickels are one of the most Beautiful coins ever made (same as .02 centers)

I once had a "prototype" (AKA = "pattern") of which only 14 are known to exist (PR64 1866 5C Shield Five Cents, Judd-495, Pollock-582, High R.7)

it was a Proof strike --- they were struck for the purpose of "consideration" by the President of the United States and a few select others to be considered for possible minting and circulation.

It happens that the pattern I had was declined and so/hence only 14 were known to be stuck

I sold it to a buddy of mine who's also a big coin collector/dealer for $4500 (it's in his personal collection as of current)

most recent price at auction 3 yrs ago realized $6,325.00 for one graded the exact same

Pretty good for a nickle Wayne...

Yes the Shield is my Favorite Nickle but not my favorite coin..

I'm a 2 center fan as my favorite non Silver coin...

Capped bust silver are my favorites...

but i Also have to admit the eagle on the Standing liberty Quarters just looks so majestic...like its actually going to fly off the coin..

Morgan's get special praise from me Too..
