Pimento,
I just made the changes you recommended and saved 310K of bandwidth per forum page download! This makes the page load faster for users and saves 1.2 GIG of bandwidth per day (at 4,000 page views per day. Now I know why I should have paid more attention in math class...

Pimento,
Thank you for this enlightening information, it makes better sense now and the math seems to add up. I should pay you a consultant fee. I never really though about the epiphany training adds as being so bandwidth hungry. When the site had fewer page views, it didn't matter. but with the 'growing pains', I need to re-assess images and not just take it for grante

I would like to host the images on THIS site , BUT, a few months ago I ran over my 100 gigabytes of allotted bandwidth WITHOUT hosting images. I'm trying to figure out how this site runs through over three gigs of bandwidth a day when most of what loads is only data (text) a few recurring images (header images) and the Phorum template (not much bytes there) with only about 4 thousand page v

I think that probably there is a lot of traffic on the server when these problems occur. It doesn't seem to happen late at night, so I believe it is a server traffic issue. This forum is hosted on a shared server (due to cost) and possibly another website has recently been added to the shared server that pulls a lot of traffic. I'll look in to the problem, if it persists, I might mov

I' ll be staying at Quality Inn West 249 Highway 68, Sweetwater, TN. Expedia.com rates it at very good, about the best rated hotel / motel in the area. IF we go there and not to Santee S.C., we also plan on visiting the 'lost sea' underwater cave attraction. There's really nothing in Santee S.C. besides golf, but my 7 year old doesn't golf.

I have a hotel room reserved in Santee South Carolina and Sweetwater Tennessee. A few days before the eclipse I will check the weather and see which site will have the best weather and cancel the other reservation. If you don't have a room reserved by now, you might not get one.

Sorry to see you go, sorry you feel the way you do. I just moderate lightly, try not to inhibit exchanges of valid data or good humor. I believe the forum enjoyed your posts and you will be missed.

I thought about this a while back but did not pursue it. I thought that using a multiple rating system would work well IF metal detectors were categorized. For example, categories might include: General Purpose Hunting (multiple category uses), Relic Hunting, Old Coin, Beach Wet Sand, Beach Dry Sand, possibly Micro Gold and also meteorites(?) Each category of would have different criteria per

This must be a new feature of the update. I can just force it to not allow users to show their e-mail address, like it used to be (?). Your email address can not be seen unless you chose to let it be seen. Maybe I should just force it no to not be visible ?

It seems that the upgrade is complete and everything works EXCEPT the forum will not send out e-mail (the ERROR 500). PM's work EXCEPT the e-mail notification. Also, the e-mail notifications to new members signing up and the notification to admin for approval does not work. I am working on this as I have the opportunity, but with the holidays and my real job work schedule, I don't ha

Forum Members,
The site PMs are not working right now and I don't know why. The next opportunity I will have to try and fix this is Tuesday night / Wednesday morning, December 20-21. My work schedule is fairly intense right now and this will be the next time period where I can dedicate many hours (if necessary) to try and do a fresh re-load of the updated software. When trying to

Did you log in and then post something rather quickly? I have enabled a security feature that rejects posts from 'users' that post something rather quickly after logging in to prevent 'spambots' from propagating their spam. If that sounds like what you did, I will disable that function.

It looks like the upgrade is installed and the site is still running. Now, I just have to configure the add-on modules and get the security suite running.

It has really been nice for the past few days to not have an e-mail box full of notifications to the moderator informing me of the latest antics of a troublesome and troubled troll. I do GREATLY appreciate those who take the time to send the notifications, but I think you know what I mean when I say it's nice not having to get them.
I will attempt to install the upgrade late tonight

I hope so. The problem with posting photos is the amount of space they use in the server disc memory and the amount of bandwidth uploading the photos from the server uses. Dankowski Detectors only has a limited amount of server disc space and bandwidth. We already use about 90% of our allotted bandwidth each month, so if we stored photos on the server, the bandwidth to move those photos from t

Forum Members,
I will be performing a software upgrade to resolve some of the shortcomings of this forum. The software that runs this forum (Powered by Phorum) is actually quite old and really not really the best out there, but, 9 or 10 years ago when Tom decided to start a discussion area, this is the software package / platform I chose. Why? Because this is the same software that run

diggwr27, banning an IP has been ineffective as banned users can utilize virtual IP addresses. plus banning IP addresses often impacts those who have done no wrong. There are numerous solutions, but most are inconvenient to forum users. I will come up with some sort of a solution, I hope.

It must be some sort of glitch. I only ban IPs of spammers from China and India. I'll do a system reset and hope everything goes well.

In regards to noise on the forum, let me state my position. As a website with an open forum, we try to moderate as little as possible to maintain free and open communications. We don’t want to be the kind of site that bans members for posting an opinion other than mine or Tom’s. We rarely delete a post (other than Moving Services in India or Nike Shoes in Japan type SPAM posting) and even more
