General age of finds in your area?
April 07, 2016 08:50AM
It would be interesting to here what people in different parts are commonly searching for and the general age and how it effects our views on what is a good/average/poor performing detector, here in Northern Ireland on general pasture/farm land we will find coins from the time of the plantation in the 1600s onwards, on older more specific sites they go back to before the 12th century, and occasionally the odd bit of Viking loot is turned up or celtic items.
My home and smallholding is dated beginning of the 1800s so i commonly find small copper/silver coins from this period.

Of course, we don't have finds dating back that far.. as you know....I would become breathless (as in forgetting to breath) if I found Viking loot or anything in that era.
I'm in the older part of the U.S., about 30 miles north of Philadelphia, so we do pull up coins from the 1600's (rare) onward. Mostly 1800's with a few 17's in the mix.

Mid to late 1800's here in No. Michigan. Do get the occasional early 1800 well worn coin and a button or two.

Mainly early 1800s and up here in our state

the very southern counties of the state produce early 1800s and even an occasional late 1700s coin/button (the fort areas = Detroit and Mackinac) can/do produce far earlier on occasion

here in the central areas of the state we normally find 1830s and up (mostly 1850s and up) as the central area/s weren't starting to be settled until the mid/late 1830s after the treaty of 1832 which pushed the injuns out

I have found stuff as early as the 1820s on occasion on sites that are along/on the stagecoach route/s here in this area though thumbs down

Same as Jackpine said except a 1700's fort area.

Totally depends on the area/ site.

By the river,, mid to late 1700s,, early to mid 1800s.

Most older standing houses,, early 1900s

The similar looking framed houses built in the 30s and 40s-- finds mainly from the 40s and 50s.,. few early to mid 60s.

And then there a few CW sites,, scattered,, not a lot of action,, and actually hard to locate

Mostly Civil War and newer in most spots in MO. Some old river towns dip into the 1825-1875 range.

General age in my area would be about 1830 on up..

Yet if you poke around you can get into the late 1700's here and there.. and if you Know really were to poke..1540s can be done winking smiley

Here in Southern Indiana coins can be from the late 1700's to now. My oldest coin so far has been a 1828 LC. My friend has found late 1700 coins.

What's possible and what I've found are two very different things. That being said, there is a town near me that was the sight of a fur trading post that dates back to 1695.

Most of the finds I've made and others around here are from the mid 1800's on up.

I found two from the 1700's here in PA between Philly and Harrisburg. Large cents from the 1800's are common. A couple buddies have found Spanish silver. I'm happy with any silver. I would love to hunt a Rev. War site, but I just don't get time to do the research.

Here in Ohio, I found a 1835 LC yesterday. I know there has got to be older coins here, but trash has them covered. I sure would like to do a 1700's this year. Good Luck Boys

1920's - 1940's coins are fairly common to find in Florida....... with metal detectors.

1520's - 1540's coins (and implements) are fairly common finds in Florida ..... during archaeological deep excavation efforts.
