What was your "funniest or funnest detecting find"

Mine was while hunting the woods next to the site of an old Horse Racing track. I found a pocket spill of Circa 1930's coins and a couple feet away a 3 Merry Widows tin. confused smiley smoking smiley

An easy one for me to answer,,,

This Uncle Sam play dime I found a few days ago,,,swore it was a half dime,,,and then suffered the big let down with an actual laugh.

The first piece of play money I've ever found--- seems around here back in the day,,,folks so poor they could even afford to buy play money for their kids.

Funniest was in about 1995 while out scouting for an old festival grounds with my newly purchased XLT where a reunion was held annually from the 1880s till 1940s and admission was .50 cents per family (wanting to find old .50 cent pieces) I was trekking through a wooded area along a riverside out in the middle of nowheresville and came upon an old Garrett TR machine sticking out of a hillside 1/2 buried in dirt and bent almost 90' degrees! You could tell it was there for probably 10 yrs or more all beat to crap, faded, missing the battery door, etc!

Seems someone a good decade before me had the same idea and was hot on the trail to the same place I was searching for but must have had a mishap with his machine and just tossed it! grinning smiley

I think that when my dad took the Deus out for the third time. Deus kept sounding off and he was like, "whats wrong with this thing". I knew that the area was saturated with coins. I said, "maybe you need to ground balance". He kept trying to then finally got a lock. He started swinging and he got a solid quarter signal out of all the hits he was getting. I said, "that could be silver". He hit an area that had 93 coins just below the surface all new clad. The Long story short, he was there 30 minutes with the pin-pointer gathering so many coins, and his pockets were so full of clad, that his pants kept falling down LOL Don't worry, he got me back lots of times smiling smiley

I don't know how funny this is but my buddy I was detecting with found it humorous.

I went hunting at an old home site and got a deep good coin signal. I dug it up and it was a big round copper looking coin. I starting cleaning it and "One Cent" appeared on it. I thought I had dug my first large cent (I'm in Northern Illinois so that's no small feat).
I was so exited and yelled to my friend that I found a large cent, then I cleaned off the front and it turned out to be a 1887 Canadian large cent. (still ok but I was dissapointed).

About the only thing funnier than that would have been if a tree was growing out around it.

One Memorial Day weekend a bunch of us from church got together for a Memorial Day picnic in a local park. I brought 5 detectors with me and after lunch I gave everyone a quick tutorial on how they worked and everyone broke off around a detector and went beeping. I just bounced from group to group with pinpointer to help make the recoveries faster.

My friend Cleveland found a big coin spill and was busy beeping it and cleaning it up, find coin after coin. A few of the others noticed and came over to horn in on his treasure. He was down on a knee trying to retrieve another coin while trying to fend off the intruder coils. "This is my spot, you guys go find your own!". The others weren't letting up and they were beeping and trying to recover the same coins. He wound up calling for help to fend them off. Pretty funny. Good memories.

Go on, get! This is my spot, you go find your own spot!

I have fooled with some of my friends minds when asked to compare signals with my detector. I just drop a rusty nail from my pouch on top if their signal and say I can't get a good signal, then they try and can't find that signal again until I remove the nail...........LOL

I went out with my first metal detector, a Compass Yukon 77b Professional. I was in a sand pit and got a signal. I had a regular shovel and digging down and at about 2' I hit the top of a pickup truck. I stopped there and didn't look in it.

Tom, I remember when you found that merry widow tin back in the woods and you couldn't stop laughing.

That was a fun day with you and John. Probably the most straight hours of detecting we ever did.. Although the funniest find it was not the best of the day. A few minutes later I found that Copper Culture Awl.

Winters' icy cold breath
May 13, 2016 03:48AM
One winter years ago, a detecting buddy and I had cabin fever in the worst way and did a road trip to the far south end of the state in hopes of some unfrozen ground. For the day, we hunted the yards of old homes. Towards evening, a bitter cold storm front was blowing in as we were hunting the front yard of an old bungalow style house from the 20's. The sweet old lady living there was chatting about the history of the house and neighborhood and watching what we were doing. Then the cold front hits and the temp drops and gets bitter cold and we are at the end of our day. I've had enough. My buddy is digging one last signal up near the porch where the sweet old lady is watching and has his back to her. His jeans are riding LOW from the weight of his White's 6000 Di Pro Hip Mount. I walk up to the porch to thank her, saying that with the cold and the wind it is time to call it a day. She points down at my friend who's kneeling down still recovering the find and says she doesn't see how he can keep hunting with that ice cold wind blowing down his crack. He heard that and sheepishly stood to hoist his jeans. I couldn't stop laughing all the way home and it is still fun to remind him of that.

LOL, That's hilarious. Little old ladies say the darnedest things. That would be a good TV show.

My brother in-law's mother is in her 90's and says whatever is on her mind, No filter. She's hilarious.

1. Dug a 100 won coin to be rewarded with a 400 dollar in scrap gold necklace in the same hole.

2. Dug a bottle cap and in the clump of dirt 180 bucks in scrap gold.

3. Not a detecting find. Was walking along minding my own business and found a gold watch bracelet in a small zip lock bag. Of all the places in front of a gold buying shop! 800 in scrap gold.

One day I was digging and I dug...a digger!

Another time I opened a hole and saw this staring back at me.
Pretty bad when your targets give you attitude out there in the field.

This was quite some time back....I was a a pull tab streak before I knew better and I got a really sweet high conducting signal a few inches down(I SO wish I had a picture of this) and I dug up THE hugest pull tab you've EVER seen. I don't even know what it was off of but I've never seen one before or since. It wasn't as funny as it was ironic, pull tabs were just lighting me up and then I found a gigantic one. I think I went home and did a hard reset on my brain after that!
Re: What was your "funniest or funnest detecting find"

At my first ever DIV hunt, I found a Civil War bullet carved in a very detailed penis. When I first saw it I thought it was a carved chess piece and about mid day I was sitting down to eat a sandwich and was looking at some of the things I had found that morning. I pulled the bullet out and by then, some of the dirt had dried and I was able to see it better. I sat there on the ground laughing and one of the hunt organizers happened to be riding along the field and spotted me and came over to chat. I didn't know the guy at all and he asked me if I was finding much. I told him all excited "I found a penis earlier" and he didn't know whether to run from me or to laugh. I then showed him the bullet and we had a good laugh and then introduced ourselves. He knew me from my forum posts but had never met me in person and had no idea who I was when he stopped. To this day, he still tells that as his story for how he first met ole Daniel from Tn.

My funnest day digging though was with my uncle and one of his hunting buddies. I was working 2nd shift at the time and we had went hunting one morning before I had to go to work at 3 in the evening. The hunt was pretty much slim pickins for the day and while we were heading home about 12:00, we spotted a guy on a tractor in a field we had been wanting to hunt. He had just finished mowing the field. We asked if he minded us hunting it and he said to go ahead. What we didn't know was...we had just stumbled onto the site I call "bullet hill". And we literally couldn't walk 10 steps without finding a civil war bullet. It was one after the other. We were having so much fun digging them that time jumped from 12:00 to after 2:00 in what seemed like 5 minutes. I ended up calling into work that day because no way was I going to leave that much fun. There were 3 of us hunting and all 3 of us found over 100 bullets that day. We left from being tired after digging so many holes; having already spent most of the day swinging and not finding anything but a single bullet.

Probably more frustrating then fun, but once I was detecting an old 1870's lost railroad depot in an old Nevada ghost town with some friends. One friend found a token and a Chinese cache coin, he was jumping up and down that he just found them, and just as he was doing his happy dance I stepped on a sage brush and a giant black snake with white rings jumped out of the sage brush! Later while detecting the same location, I got a mid tone and dug it, and at the bottom of the hole I was sure was a US $1 gold piece starting back at me! I pulled it out of the hole and it turned out to be a pin with a faux US $1 gold piece on it....wha wha wah....
