My 1st Seated Half Dime
February 01, 2017 01:57AM
Yesterday, went on a hunt at a location that produced a 1900s Barber Dime, 1 or 2 Mercury Dimes, a 1953 Quarter, and lots of Wheaties.

It became a park in the early 1900s, so wasn’t expecting anything this old.

Used the CTX with the 17 inch coil for 1st time at this site, hoping for extra depth, increased coverage, and to detect not-too-deep coins on edge.

Got a 1940 nickel, then a 1955 dime, and 2 wheaties.
Then got an old wheat penny signal with a conductivity of around 38. Dug a nice plug, expecting a penny at a depth of at least 5 inches. Saw a grayish disc, and assumed it was aluminum until I saw that beautiful seated lady on the front. After overcoming the “stunned” affect, did a more thorough search of the area, but only got another wheat penny.

After a quick electrolysis, and a baking soda / water paste rubdown, most of light corrosion came off.
Besides a slight dent, and a couple of small patches of corrosion, it looks pretty good.

First, a 1913-s type 2 buffalo nickel, and now, my 1st seated half dime. Its starting off to be a good year.

Here are the finds. The 1866-s half dime is in better condition than the 1955 dime.

In the left photo, you can see the corrosion on the upper left side of the half dime.
There was similar corrosion around the mintmark, but it cleaned up nicely.

Thanks.
I guess it’s a hit or miss thing, where location can be a factor.
Hunting on the San Francisco peninsula (not far from the SF mint), you’d figure that detectorists would run into a few of these little beauties.
But after many, many hunts over the last 7 years, I unexpectedly detected one with a large 17 inch coil.

Who knows. One day you might unexpectedly detect a 3-cent piece, or, dare I say, a “gold” coin.

Live and hunt on the San Francisco peninsula.

Congrats on the seated half-dime. I think any seated coin from the 1860's is hard to find. I have seated coins from the 1830's, 40's, 50's, 70's, 80's. and 91 but nothing from the 60's, at least not where I am at. Don't know if it had any thing to do with the civil war or not.

Thanks.
Imagine being 100% sure that the coin in the plug is going to be another wheat penny.
Then you see what appears to be an aluminum disc, and assume that it’s only trash.
Then, when you clean off the face, you see your first seated half dime.
At first, you’re stunned with disbelief. But once you realize that it’s real, you’ll feel pretty good.
It will boost your confidence, and make you feel like you’ll find another difficult-to-find coin within the next few hunts.
But, after my next few hunts of not finding anything out of the ordinary, the euphoria will finally fade away.

I previously detected a corroded 1864-s and an 1865-s, now I have an 1866 seated half dime.
So far, I have seated liberty coins from every decade except the 1830s. The earliest is an 1845, and earliest U.S. coin is an 1835 corroded large cent.

Above on the right is a Canadian half dime that I detected at a U.S. park years earlier.

Thanks.

Sounds like it’s time to do some research for nearby Civil War era camps here around the San Francisco Bay. Unfortunately, the best sites would most likely be on federal lands.
