Check out the above link, This fellow uses a computer to listen for the proper resonant frequencies of real coins and notes the resonant frequencies of fakes. Good forensic stuff.
All metal objects, regardless of shape or size have their own distinctive audio resonant properties, thereby making this possible.

This is nothing new, as a coin collector I came across this article a while back. Really makes me angry, but this sort of thing has been going on for thousands of years, just not on this kind of scale.
