The old Bounty Hunter Time Ranger offered the greatest visual Target ID resolution ever available on a metal detector (The TID range was 0 to 299) until we started to see aftermarket 550 meters and such for the Sovereigns. And although there were times you could get a number lock, most times it didn't. You had to learn how to make multiple passes and interpret the range of TID responses. Much like we do today with 0-99 TID range units, only with the Time Ranger the spread could be a lot larger because the resolution was so much finer. Trash target TID jumping could be even larger in range.
The major benefit in smaller TID ranges is TID stability. One of the touted benefits of the EQ is improved 'target id stability' and much of that 'stability' will be due to the compressed TID range of the design.

What was great about the Sovereigns was that you could "charge up" the target and get a number lock so that even if you were using a 180 or a 550 meter, you could charge up and get a solid id. Other units with large spreads of TID like the CoinStrike or a Cortes offered an 'average' feature that let you obtain a solid TID.

I expect the EQ series will use the lower resolution visual range as a stability aid in single freq mode, and will use an averaged response in multifreq mode to give more stable id in multifreq mode, which will the appearance of even greater stablity due to the lower resolution it is responding in.

At the current time, detectors do not allow accurate identification of targets, especially at great depths, so most treasure hunters:

1. Dig all the finds in those places where there are few signals.
2. Digging everything that is not "iron" in trash.

Brandon Neice says , trust me you don't need more than 50 segments. End of story.
