Do you remember where you were when...?

I’m celebrating a Historical Anniversary - exactly 50 years ago today, having just finished USAF Pilot Training, I checked in at the Billeting Office at Fairchild Air Force Base to attend USAF Survival School at just before 1400hrs local time -

Big deal - right?

Well it was for me, because up in a corner of the room over the check in desk was a little black and white TV and there was live coverage of Neal Armstrong just climbing out of the Apollo landing vehicle!

Armstrong walks on moon. At 10:56 p.m. EDT, American astronaut Neil Armstrong, 240,000 miles from Earth, speaks these words to more than a billion people listening at home: “That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

Great memories.

I got a degree in Electronic Engineering 42 years ago and was working on a drawing board starting on the F15 fighter jet. Then moved to the AV-8B ( modifying the Harrier jump jet) right out of college at McDonald Douglas Aircraft.

I was 16 and working at a Marina. Watched it along with a couple customers on a tiny Black & White TV.

Here’s a link to a webpage by a great NASA fan. He has a very popular photography forum and is loved/hated by everybody in the photo world. His day by day celebration of the moonshot is nice however, just scroll down and see the updates, Lots of detail especially about th still photos they took with the Hasselblad cameras they took along.

I was seven. They drug us down to the auditorium to watch it on B/W tv's. I remember the teachers being so proud.

Thanks for the 'Rockwell' link, Rick, very interesting.

At just 3 years of age, I don't think I would've understood the occasion.

Yeah I was 7 years old and tutoring HS students in math. Seems I remember we had a solar eclipse around this same time frame here.

Boy how time flies.

Hard to believe I have been a member here as long as I have been.

55,000 HP only spins a turbine. What does this turbine do?

This turbine spins two pumps: one for rocket fuel, and the other for liquid oxygen.

These pump 40,000 gallons per minute of rocket fuel and liquid oxygen.

Holy mackerel,...Got lost in that article.
