@cjc, read and studied your fine book. (Still reading it over, and applied many things in it)

I wonder why at times I will hear what sounds like a good clear tone but no VDI number appears? Is this because it is too deep or some other reason?

I listen first, don't stare at the readout. So I will hear what sounds like a high conductor look at the screen and no number appears. Happens with Ferrous tones also sometimes.

These high gain machines respond not so much to metals but to extreme changes in what's under the coil. Sounds like what you are hearing is ground noises--but with no definite signature that would give a meter reading. Either that or an "out of range" target. cjc
