Looks like you Florida boys need to hit the beaches
August 27, 2011 12:15AM
I was watching a news clip from Orlando new's and saw a reporter on Satellite Beach get hit by a wave...If you watch long enough he shows where the sand height was yesterday compared to the day he is filming....

Ought to be some good finds coming up along the Atlantic in the next few hunt's!!!

Heres the link to the vid

N.J. shores also... understand they are shutting roads to Atlantic City Casinio's and shutting down the Casino's so don't expect to get in till the ban is lifted. Safety first is in order and know one fellow that needed a new paint job on his vehicle caused by the elements so do be careful. Myself will be watching on TV as those days are over for me but years ago did find a 1781 Realle that had to come off a ship from who knows where and a bunch of beat up silver as salt water does a number on it...

I know these storms dont come every day. Only been here in Fl a month.... if i had a hunting partner to make the run with id check it out. Here in Englewood today it was windy and choppy ... but nothing huge.

So True Dan should be good hunting all up and down the Eastern Seaboard

Think of all the treasure's being unearthed from the erosion right now......

I remember back in the early 90's my wife and me were traveling along the Outer bank's of N.Carolina and I pulled off in a spot and walked out to the beach and you could actually see the timber's of shipwreck's jutting up along the beach looked eerily like carcases the way the timber's of the ships hull's created sort of a skeletal figure in the sand.......

Any way I talked to a guy there and he said they come and go on the Outer Bank's like that....one week you see one the next it's buried and a new one pop's up......Can you imagine what will be exposed for the next few day's just in that area????I always heard it was the Graveyard of the Atlantic and with due reason!!!!

That Spanish coin sounds great for sure Dan....I always wanted to find a Spanish coin on a beach....A cob would be great!!!!!

Yes there should be great caution taken if you can venture out on the beaches right now.....Look at that reporter....Never know when a larger than normal wave will creep in on ya.....

But I will almost bet ya there is some Guy's on the Florida Atlantic Coast Right now hunting..I know if I was down there right now I would do my darndest to get on the coast right there where that reporter is at ....Satellite Beach....that's the 1715 site from all I have read....

P.S. I just ran across this site that shows what I was talking about on the wrecks at the outer bank's...

Yes Keith...I too, would probably one of those crazys....

BTW...I've been wondering, especially since I dont live anywhere near a ocean....how long does it take for all the sand to be replaced on a beach.
And of course I realize that depends on how much was removed, but lets say there was a 3ft cut made, how long would it take for all that sand to be replaced?

Hey Aaron....I have hunted a Beach maybe 6 times in my life so I would be the last person to ask about that....But I would imagine it takes a couple of weeks or more to replace it under normal tide patterns?

If I was on a Beach right now following Irene I myself would probably look for the real deep Canal's cut into the beach.....Maybe some Hardpan???? will be showing in those area's...Then try and locate where the lead sinkers are coming up in those rut's and just concentrate in those area's....Maybe luck up with some gold piece's....I would not bother with area's that still have a lot of sand but look for the deep ravine's and maybe get into something...

I am sure it is always a gamble,,,But limited time is a factor.....

All speculation on my part but I would try to use some sort of Judgement and be determined for success !!

Aaron,

It don't take long for the sand to come back in. Like Tom says you need to get rid of 14 - feet of sand to get down to the goodies but.... It only takes 2 - 3 feet of sand to come back in and put your targets beyond reach. You can still work the cut in the dune but the majority of the hunt area is gone with just a few feet washing back in.

Over on the Gulf coast where I live we don't have but 2 foot of sand at most but we don't have a 1715 wrecksite to keep it glittering with silver and gold. We do have wrecks in the area and quite a history of Pirate activity but the pickings are a lot slimmer than the East Coast in Tom's area.

Just to finish answering your question if the conditions turn good you must be ready to move on it. Most of our regulars have a travel kit made up with necesities and if beaches are barracaded then they swim the Indian River to get to the Island. Like it has been said several times in the posts of this forum. It is very risky situation and the better the conditions are to find something the riskier it is..

I stopped worrying about it 10 years ago when I made up my mind I would never be rich or pretty!

Best of luck if you go.

Dont know about your area Wally.... but here in the Englewood area i hit a couple of beaches and the wind was blowing and the waves had brought in a ton of sand. Aaron that just in a couple of days and its going to take some time to move it out . With all the weeds and trash it put on the beach i wonder what the huntings going to be like once it calms a bit. Im hoping it moved it from the bottom and opened up some spots shore hunters cant get to. But right now...... surfs up.
