Fisher 1266

One is for sale locally, can those of you who have used this machine provide some tell me a bit about it, tone(s), depth, separation. I hear some people still use them in the iron. What is the difference between the 1266X and the 1266XB.

Excellent ergonomically with batteries under armcup...excellent depth but noisy unit with snap-crackle and pop discriminating objects out...Many oldtimers swear by them but takes time to learn its language...

Hi,,,The 1266 is a single tone machine, the depth is right up there with it's modern counterparts..The F-75 is a spin off of the 1266...The Fisher 1266XB is the same machine but is a break down model which usually came with a carrying case...These are considered to be a noisier machine for the most part but are still good in iron....Another draw back with the 1200 series machines were the inability to discriminate at depths...They can however be modified to run as quiet as a church mouse and discriminate accurately to all depths....Hope this helps.....JJ

One giant step further is the 1266 MAGNUM, which trumps everything!

What is a 1266 magnum Aaron? I've never heard of it.

The Magnum was good but the 1266 Ultimate black edition was the best. smiling smiley

The 1266 Magnum is a proto-type FISHER made that operates just like the regular 1266 except its the deepest one on the planet. It uses 2 9v batteries along w the standard 8 AAs.

It can detect a round pull tab in the sand at 22" and a mans wedding ring at 26", extremely powerful, quite a big learning curve to learn.

Once in a while..... I'll "let go" of something unique, to a selected individual.

Tom it sounds like you got some unique stuff, I would love to give a beefed up 1266 a try in my area on relics.

This was one of my 'tuitions'..... as to how/why I learned that many, many targets are beyond the detectable depth range of what the open market regular/general-purpose detectors can achieve. Subsequently; "Specialty detectors" marketing opportunities abound herein.
Once in a while..... you will find a few old coins/relics that were shallow; yet, this is not the norm. Under this circumstance/scenario....... it is all-to-easy to make the incorrect assumption that "most of my old coins found....were shallow".
The 1266-X Magnum was a one-off///one-of-a-kind unit. No more. Yet, I still have some unique one-off's somewhere in my inventory.

This is an interesting topic. I have a Fisher 1265-X that has been updated with the 8" spider coil that I wont ever part ways with. I remember one day when I had first got it, that it went crazy chattering, and was unusable. We took it to the local dealer, in which an old relic hunting legend was in the shop that day. He took my machine and listened to it...said he knew what was wrong with it. He took the control box apart, and it was a little paperclip holding back a certain wire...that paperclip had fallen and allowed the wire to come in contact with the other wires inside, and thus the chatter. He simply put the paperclip back in place with the wire it was holding...and the machine was fixed. He then looks at me and said he was going to "super charge" the machine for me, if I would allow him to. He got in there and done something inside the machine...what he did, I have no idea. All I know is...whatever he did, that secret went with him to the grave. I've found several other people in the area that knew him, that said if that particular guy liked you, he would do stuff like that for your machines...and supe them up in horsepower. Later on, I had the 1266-X and many other machines...and I would to this day, hold that 1265-X up against any of them in depth.

Metal detector manufacturers must follow guidelines, but that doesn't mean those in the know can't make them better...nuff said I guess but.

Always remember at a planted hunt a few fellows talking and seems like the 235's were the unit to own and they went into the control box and made the coil cover a larger area which was a big plus for coverage in a planted hunt. Cheating perhaps but such is life...

Especially if your not used to digging at least a minimum of 15" every hole....
