It's ok to hammer me on this idea...

I've been thinking wouldn't it be nice if your
detector or even headphones had a "Depth Discriminator"
option for coin hunting. Able to be adjusted and turned
off and on as desired.

It would work opposite the way a squelch works on a CB or
scanner operates. The loud sounds would be mute and the medium and
soft sounds would be allowed to pass through.

This way all the surface, one inch, and two inch targets would
be silenced and the softer deeper targets would be left.

Miss a few good targets? sure, but not many old coins are in the first
3 inches these days.

I know if my idea was a good one someone would have already
incorporated it into a detector or headset, but why not?

Etrac's and CTX's have something similar (you can turn up the soft/deep tones but you can't turn the shallow/louder ones down)...

The Fisher 1236x had a surface blanker of some sort.

AKA Signum is able increase the volume of weak signal and lower the volume of strong signal.

I was unaware that this has been done before!

Seems like a simple enough circuit that it could
be added between detector and headset or just build
into the headset.

The Big Bud Pro had a surface blanker that they claimed was able to ignore targets within the first 4 inches enabling you detect right through surface garbage. It however, was only a sales gimmick that really didnt work.

Be great if it did though...

The Garrett GTI 2500 has the same thing but I never found it to work worth a xoxo!

Indeed some older units had this option but did not work exactly like it should so units that followed had them discontinued...If I remember correctly Big Bud, Garrett and Compass to name some were on older units...

Seem like with todays technology they could make it work.
Even connected to the depth lcd circuit. No bars or one bar = no sound
two or three bars = audio

You have to wonder if it blanks some target out a few inches deep if there a deep target under it what happens.

Thanks Ozzie. I had a couple of the Big Bud units. They seemed to work but not always perfect. I gave one away and sold the other.

Actually, I have been pushing this idea for a CTX 3030 update. This can be coded as a simple logic statement:

If target is < x inches then no tone

Surface blankers work off signal intensity..And machines depth meters are calibrated to coin's..

if it say its 2 inches or 4 inches it will blank it out in the audio.. accroding to which selection is selected...

say you have a dime reading on the meter and it says its 4 inches deep...well it will blank the audio..back in the day people were looking fior silver and it was usually deeper and the clad was on the surface more or less...so when cherry picking the 6-7 inch silver from clad was sort of easy and the blanker was for the hit it and get it guys...

but those days are gone more or less..Now we have to try and get the 8-9-10 or more silver...

you can do the same thing with your eyes especially if your machine has a constant running depth metter....if you see a target that says 4 inches you can move on ...same prinicipal..

nothing fancy going on just a extra feature to make sales..

if your on a seeded hunt though make sure you turn it off LOL!!!!
