Short Hunt on Ancient Site w/CTX & 6" Coil
May 02, 2014 02:56AM
Hey all

got out for a few hrs a couple days ago but been too busy to post til now!

Found a site in use from 1830s thru 1860s or so but it's been dug by others in the past.

I did manage a few goodies with the CTX & 6" coil though :-)

The iron was pretty bad (machine gun type)!

The 1837 Canada 1/2 penny read like iron as it was on edge and approx. 7" deep but the Target Trace and sound was "telling" in the case of "to dig or not to dig" ;-)

Found a couple lead pistol balls - a Quality button, some sort of triangle thing??, flat button, lead weight, flat thimble, etc.

All in all it was a fun hunt --- thanks for looking/reading and

HH all

Nice looking finds. Congrats. You sure have a way with finding the older sites.

It sounds like those deep coins that are on edge are the ones that previous detectorists are most likely to miss, especially if they read like iron.
Honing ones skills on such targets might produce some very good finds in heavily hunted, iron laden areas. Those challenging targets can be quite memorable.

Congrats on the finds, and locating those old sites.

I found a flat button that looks exactly like the one you found. Looks like a washer with a rod across the center. Very plain, no writing. I don't know much about buttons. Is it just a common trouser button or something? I found it on an old homestead going back to around 1850..... Looks like you had a fun hunt.

That's not the flat button techman

the flat button is next to that piece

the piece you're referring to is the "lead weight" which is actually a "Hem Weight" --- they tied to strings and hung from the inside of women's dresses (pre 1900) to keep them (the dresses) from blowing up in the wind! lol

Thank you, MichiganRelicHunter.....now I know what it is. I thought it seemed a bit soft for a button. I've wondered for a long what it was....

Nice work in a nasty site. You figure out what the triangle piece is?
