Would You?
January 14, 2015 12:09AM
Say there was a 4 pound detector that could detect coins from the surface all the way down to 2 to 2.5 feet and was pretty good at separation and had excellent I.D and disc, to almost max depth. With this unit you could clean out areas almost completly, down to over 2'. It only needed a 12" coil to do this. Battery life was only 10 hrs on 4 - 9v's.

1- Would you own one if the price was say, (I'll stay low) $1,800?

2- Would you dig that deep ? Or would you pass and stick with the 10"- 12" deep units that separate very well and with great I.D to close to its max depth?

3- Would you buy it and only dig targets to around 15" and only dig the 2 footers if in the mood ?

4- A tool for the arsenal? or No?

Me, I'd get it in a heartbeat...cause I want depth....the old coins ARE down there.

Heck a 2-2.5 ft hole is going to have to be about that far across the hole. That's a lot of dirt and digging.... I'd dig two holes then have to go home for a nap. I probably wouldn't have one as I'd never dig that deep.
Re: Would You?

I guess my question would be if it can detect a coin at 2 feet, does it detect a can a 4 ?
Re: Would You?
January 14, 2015 12:27AM
I would if it could tell me to some degree of certainty what alloy the metal was composed of...
Dig a two foot hole for gold? You bet!

Good question; Modern can? Without getting carried away with this miracle unit, I'd have to say Yes. One modern can find that deep or less, I'd get in the truck and go elsewhere.

I hear ya Jack. Maybe we should have a coffee maker on this unit. lol.

Id pay more than that for a machine that could hit and ID a dime at 15" lol.

... yeah, but, is it waterproof?

Surely you jest. lol. I'd have to add another $250 to the price, for waterproof.

Without a doubt --providing it was made in the US.
In addition , I would leave every third target in the ground for the next generation of detectorists smiling smiley

Haha,sure you would!
Re: Would You?

Mixed feelings on this. I wouldnt mind digging 2 and a half feet, but being able to dig that deep would basically kill off metal detecting on any public lands. Parks, schools, churches, sidewalk strips, public use land etc. would all be banned because of massive craters left behind.

Locally, there was issues with some yahoo using a pick at a park here and he was digging only 6 inches or so, I can't imagine 24".
Re: Would You?

Minus the super ID, that's where I currently am with these minelab pulse machines. I had mine in one of my civil war camps a week ago, in which the site has been graded some, and dirt pushed around. Dug 2 holes over 20 inches for a Sun Drop can and a Pepsi can. I thought given the location, that they might be a belt plate. After those two holes, I was about done. But if they would have been good targets, I would have happily kept on.

In Virginia one time, I dug a hole that was approx 6 feet long by 4-5 feet deep and 3 feet wide. All I found in it was some broken glass and a square nail. If I think there might be something good down there, I'm digging for it.
Re: Would You?

I think everyone knows my thoughts on this.
Most folks would be shocked at the age/value/volume of targets in the 12" - 24" strata.......... (provided the dirt is not 'fill-dirt'... full of soda cans).
There is an entire world yet to be discovered. ((( You don't know...what you don't know......... sooooo.......... it is nearly impossible to measure the "unknown"))).

true tom! but "hell's a fire!" ya can't dig down 2 feet
in a public place "without" incurring the wrath of the
"national guard!",and retiring all of us to landing "lunker" bass!
i'm just sayin'

Certainly not in parks that mom and the kids play in or the sports parks. Lands that the govt went in and forced the land owners out to build a dam to creat a lake with surrounding woods and farm fields. The county also leases some of the land to farmers for corn or soy. We all know this. They could be state or county parks. In these now parks, there were old 1700's - 1800's homes that were leveled but can be seen on old maps.
I like these type of parks because nature makes a much bigger mess than I can ever make. Uprooted trees, groundhogs, tractor and plough, etc. These are the parks I have no guilt in digging a deep hole with a shovel... away from where the public plays. A 2' deep unit would be the one to use in places such as this.

Passing thought with question; Anyone ever scan a the bottom of a huge root ball of an fallen tree and find an old coin or relic ?
Re: Would You?
January 14, 2015 03:15PM
I guess it would be doable in the boonies where the deep holes would not be a problem and of course one would have to carry a shovel. Most areas a No-No due to the large holes and mess made.
Do I feel coins are that deep( you betcha) and surely would get the ones others miss...
Re: Would You?

I've dug IH's 12" in a park. Used a hand digger and cloth but wouldn't dig any deeper than that. Maybe a little more.

What would it take to have a detector that could go that deep? Radar or something else.

To be able to see and ID to 24 inches? Yes, I would sell three of my children (metal detecting devices not biological units) in a heartbeat. Because it works everywhere does not mean I don't have the discipline to dig deep where it is OK to do so. Yet how will I know for sure?
