I am seriously thinking about the smaller coil. Many of my sites are nail gardens. I was able to pull out a 1905 Barber dime in nearly mint condition (New Orleans mint) out of a really nasty spot (also a trouser button, and a 3 ringer .58 cal). You would still read the liberty on the headband of the dime. We later went to a new site and I pulled out a nickel, 2 eagle buttons, a .58 cal . and

I went for my first full hunt to day and really didn't have any problem with the weight (thank goodness). I still thinking about the smaller coil for my real trashy sites.

Thanks guys for the help. I going out in a few for the first real test run. I may have to go to the smaller coil if I have too much trouble swing the larger one.

I just received my new AT Pro and it seems heavier and more awkward to swing than my F70 with the DD coil. According to the specifications for the AT Pro it should only weight 0.103 lbs. heavier than my F70. So either the specs for the F70 is showing it heavier or the AT Pro specs are showing it too light.
I hunt up to 8 hours at a time and weight and balance is critical to me at my size and

Thanks guys for the info. I will study some of the other post. I hunt in Mississippi and the ground isn't too much of a problem. The sites full of iron is though.

I currently own a F70 and Tejon and I search a lot of areas smack full of iron. I am looking to buy an additional detector to hunt these iron laden sites.
I am looking for advice on whether to buy a new ATPro or a used Fisher F75. Which would be better on these types of sites? Which will go deeper and separate trash better, etc? I am sure some of you have compared these head to head.

As far as relic hunting goes is there any real differences between the Gold Bug Pro and the SE? Is the depth the same?
Thanks,
Michael

Is anyone using a GPS to track your movements and to mark finds? If so what unit are you using?
Thanks,
Michael
P.S. would having a GPS unit on interfere with the detector?

I also just turned 55 and have been MD'ing since I was a kid (I used my grandfather's Whites). I bought my first detector when I was in my mid-twenties.

My brother found a gold piece here in Mississippi on a WBTS site. He is the only person that I know of that has found one. It was in mint condition with no wear. I don't recall if it was a 2 1/2 or a 5 dollar coin. Silver Reales are more common here.

My secondary worry here in Mississippi are feral hogs. They can be very aggressive and can rip your leg (or any other part of your anatomy) wide open with their tusk. I have only seen them once while metal detecting, but they are spreading more and more into my hunting zones.

I had this problem on Sunday. It was doing the iron "growl" in DE mode as if it was running in all-metal. It was reading every little bit of iron (or at least that was my impression). The problem was that I was running at a disc. of 15, sen. of 88 and threshold of -3. Thus it shouldn't have been "growling" much at all. After the reset I went back over the same ground

Tom,
My brother also thought that the machine was "glitching" software-wise. Is this a common occurrence with the F-series? I have had this happen twice since I have owned the machine, and re-setting the unit corrected the problem both times.

Steve,
On my one test dime (clad at 6" in un-sanitized ground) I can hit it with my F70 with ID numbers that bounce around mostly in the high 60's and low 70's. The ID jumps around between Zinc, Dime and Quarter, more often Dime though. I am using the 11" DD coil, sen. 88, threshold -3, Speed DE and with 4 tones. If I am dead over the target I get a consistent high tone

At factory settings the Notch is set at 1. So the question is: is notch deactivated at the factory settings?
The reason that I am asking is that I never (intentionally) use the notch feature. But the other day the F70 was acting as if I had notched "in" small iron. It was "growling" constantly on iron readings even with disc. set at "15". Finally I reset the F

While I can't recommend a detector, I am in sympathy with your hearing loss. I can't hear high-end sound either. Thus I have found that high quality headphones are a must!

I seem to be the target of choice for wasp. I have been nailed by a multitude of wasp on several occasions. Most unpleasant! I must smell bad to them. My poor son is allergic to them and on one occasion temporarily lost his vision after being stung by a carpenter bee.

I have also been chased off of two different relic hunts in October by mosquitoes (twin engine jobs if I was not mistaken). For some reason they are much more aggressive here in the Fall than in the Spring. (or are they a different variety?)
The worst case of chigger bites (red bugs to us Southerners) that I ever had was from a relic hunt back in the late 70's. Metal detecting is not fo

Yes, I have seldom seen an aggressive rattler but have been chased off of a pond before by bad tempered Moccasins. (The late Lewis Grizzard once said that there is only one kind of snake, the dreaded "Copperheaded Water Rattler"! I have a tendency to agree with him.)

For all of you that are detecting in the South please watch out for snakes as they are out early due to the warm weather. My brother and I was nearly nailed by a Cottonmouth on Saturday while relic hunting. While we did have on snake boots my wife gently persuaded me to order a set of snake chaps yesterday.

Steve,
I also noticed the "dirt" meter running high on certain high TID readings. Nearly as a rule the resulting target was large iron. I will try to make an effort this weekend to keep track of my reading vs. large iron targets and report back.

Honesty is the best policy. I think that most people would understand that these are outdoor units and may have some cosmetic blemishes.
