Look at this monster bulleteye popping smiley

I dug this out of a Reb camp and still not sure what type it is..

I think it's either a experimental or a variant of a Tennessee Hog..which was fired in a Brown Bess .75 caliber ..

its .75 caliber and 1.75 long..

Would love to find what it fit...

I have read a reference to a someone in a report in the 1800s talking about one being made during the war that had no rings and was cavity base for 6 produced experimental guns to fire the bullet that was .75 caliber was made in Atlanta arsenal..had stabilizing arms to prop it up much like a arquebus old world spanish musket..they say they saw the guns but no known bullets other than verbal ..

I sort of wonder if this is one of the experimental bullets..

its a whopper...one slight lube groove can be seen..

it was ramroded in hard

Deep cavity

Very cool! I'm away from my book and by no means a bullet guru, but I'm pretty sure Thomas mentioned larger "tower" rifles, up to .75 Cal to add another thought.. Whatever it is that's a rare bird.

Although I am not a die in the wool relic hunter, have dug hundreds of period bullets and have never seen one like that. WOW! Great save, Keith, and on the plate as well. HH jim tn

Could it be an early design of shotgun slug?
Re: Look at this monster bulleteye popping smiley

That is a fair lump of lead, and if it hit you it would be 'curtains' as they say,i dont have a clue about US firearms or CW artillery so not really sure the significance of it really, but i bet the gun/rifle that fired it would give a 'kick like a mule' grinning smiley

A very nice and unusual find.

Awesome finds Kieth! I can't wait till you find out what bullet that is. The gun that came outta had to be a shoulder breaker. What machine found it how deep was that bear?

Amazing piece of lead there Keith. Hope you are able to nail down some history on it.

That is one big bullet. One really doesn't get an idea of how big they are until you compare it to something else. The .69 cal 3 ringers are big in their own right when compared to the standard .58. A .72 caliber is one big chunk of lead.

At close to three ounces, I'm now convinced it's not a shotgun slug. If fired from a shoulder mounted gun, I'd guess the gun weighs 20 pounds or more.

That sucker is a mini-cannon!! lol They must have used 165 grains of black powder to move that projectile. Maybe even more. In any case I wouldn't want to be on either side of the firing.

Nice plate too!

Thank's Kevin!!
Text me your phone number when you get a chance..Lost my phone so lost all contacts!!

EPL II

yes a mini cannon it so seems LOL!!

Bayard..

Yeah dont think its a early slug...too Long..

I've looked at some Towers that were .75 and they were stubby ..this thing is just really massive..I have a feeling its a super rare one..

Here's the tower bullet for comparison sakes..

what's also funny is this came out of a Wheeler cavalry camp..It was at a old hous place about half mile back form camp and old cross roads...

Georgia buttons,,South carolina button ,,spurs,,,Militia plate,,, stubby .577 enfields etc..

One member on here(Sand Dog) even mentioned to me it could fit a Austrian carbine...and it may well be...and he had a good point...he said the carbines as we know where carried on a sling and usually nose down ..they would ram them home extra hard to hold them in while riding..Hence mine having the hard ram ring..

Could you imagine shooting a horse with this thing ..it would drop it instantly..Of course you didn't want to waste a mount if at all possible...most horses were rounded up and used on both sides after a Cavalry battle..

Ill keep looking..I think it may at this point be a experimental bullet the rebs were TRYING OUT on maybe some UNIQUE gun..Maybe even some sort of revolving small field cannon..
