"8 - Reale" = exactly 'one dollar'. VERY nice silver finds. Steve...... in 1857...non-American (most were Spanish) coins were to be taken out of circulation. The United States (at that point in time...in our history) ... supposedly had 'enough' U.S./American coins to fullfill the needs of commerce; HOWEVER, Spanish coins remained "American Currency" throughout the Civil War. Your Mexican 8-reale coin was used/utilized/recognized as a silver dollar to (whom ever) U.S. soldier that lost it.
I hunt Seminole Indian War sites (these are pre-Civil War)..... and find 'early American silver'............aka 'reale denominations. A 1/2 reale is a Half Dime........... a 1 reale is a Dime.........a 2 reale is a Quarter........ 4 reale is a Half Dollar...........and 8 Reale is a Dollar.

A 'half escudo' is a 1-dollar gold coin....... and is interchangable with a 8-reale silver coin.
A 'escudo' is a 2 dollar gold coin..... and is valued at 16-reales
A '2 escudo' coin is officially titled "Doubloon" and is a 4-dollar gold coin......valued at 32-reales.

etc................

This is to allude the silver-to-gold ratio of 16:1

Close to the turn of the 18th Century........ the denomination values were changed (along with the respective gold weight)....... to reflect a decimal (units of '10') numerical system...... instead of the older 'octal' system.

I am sharing this information with you (and all others)....... as you may very well find a 'escudo denomination' gold coin(s). This would NOT be uncommon...........especially....exactly where you are hunting.

Nice video perspective. What video camera and mount system are you using?

I'm working on something to video my V3i screen as well as glance to the coil during the dig.

Hi earthmansurfer,
I use the Gopro HD 960 camera, comes with an elastic headstrap mount. I recently made a video on equipment setup that shows a little detail about my camera and setup. Here is the link. [www.youtube.com]

Thank you Tom for this information! To find an escudo denomination gold coin in this area would be an awesome find! I truely enjoy looking over your Seminole War relics, similarities that perk my interest! Thanks again!

WOW!!!! Cool stuff Steve! WTG!!!!
Hey Steve thats a real nice big Piece of eight You have there
August 18, 2011 11:42PM
I am glad you found it for sure...!!!!!!..

One thing I notice on the Spanish silver and I am far from even being a Novice on it........The readings on an I.D. meter are usually lower than the American counterpart in Silver....

The Spanish must of being alloying the metal to some extent?

Now this is just from my limited resources on the subject...{I.E. the coins I have....}

But I noticed that big boy was only reading what was it like 80? An Morgan would read up there like 95 or so....

Again real nice dig... glad you caught it on film....

The 'thickness' of the Spanish coins are quite thin; subsequently.... the ID will be a bit lower............EVEN if the coin is slightly larger in diameter.

Hi Keith,

In the video the probe ID'd it at 66 which seemed pretty low because something that large in American silver would normally register well into the upper 80's or 90's. I believe your right that the Spanish must have alloyed additional metals within the silver.
