Where I grew up at, there was an old house that was built in the 1850s and stood til the late 1980s. They tore it down and my parents house sits on top of it. It's where I started metal detecting. To say I have hunted it hard would be an under statement! It was very trashy...with over 130 yrs of living in one spot plus the debris that was scattered when they tore the old house down. I had th

If the eTrac had a true all metal mode it would be the pinnacle of VLF machines for me! As already covered it is probably number 1 on the market for hunting coins in disc mode....uncannily accurate ID but just not as deep as other machines can go with their all metal modes. I would be one happy camper if it had that feature and could match or excel the F75 or V3i in all metal. WOW would be the wo

EMS -- Did you get around to testing the Detech Ultimate 13" coil? I would love to see results on it before I up and rid myself of the eTrac. I would love to have a GPX right now but our relic season is half over (turkey season opens in April and its too dangerous in the woods). So even if I got one it would sit in the house til the fall or so. The eTrac may be enough to get me through April

I kept seeing on the forums how in mineralized ground the eTrac was supposed to be better than all the other VLFs. I had to see for myself. It's a good machine, don't get me wrong. But for relic hunting I opt for all metal mode and when compared to an F75 or V3i in all metal, the eTrac can't keep up.
IF...and here is the big IF. IF I hunted with discrimination, it would be wort

I didn't say what machine he had...it wasn't an Explorer or eTrac though. In his case it was an MXT (thus the prospecting mode) I was giving an example of a person who knew his machine for his area and was dogmatic about saying other people were wrong or ignorant if they said anything other than positive about his machine of choice. I invited him up when he blasted me on one of the foru

Shambler -- You gonna provide the V3i? All I have is the eTrac. But I will tell ya what what I'll do. As far as depth goes I'm confident I can put you in some ground you'll want to wrap your explorer around a tree after hunting in. And I'm fairly confident you'll not get a diggable signal on a Civil War bullet over 10"...maybe not even 8" but I'm confident

I can't answer all your questions...I've only got a few months use of the V3I under me and that has been a couple/few years ago.
I remember there were some instances in Culpeper, VA where it was very falsy and had to be dubbed down a bit. The prototype I had didn't come with any paperwork specifying what new modes were there. I had to just sit and play with the menu and guess/e

Regarding the good signal and thinking its a can -- I was relic hunting a site in Athens, TN where they were doing some heavy equipment grading. I had been finding some civil war bullets and such there but the work crew was real messy and had been throwing their trash out and it was on top of where I had been finding relics. Went thru the trashy stuff one day and got an overload signal and raised

EMS -- When I was testing the V3i prototype, I took it to some of the hottest red dirt in the United States.....Culpeper, VA. This was for Civil War relics. I found the V3 to struggle in the red dirt UNTIL I hit on the magic settings. Once I did that I was feeling good as relics began popping out of the ground at some awesome depths.
The key tickets are two settings with an extra tweak or two

You don't HAVE to do all that setup to go out and hunt sites with the V3i. Just a few minor tweaks of the factory preset programs and you've got a VLF capable of depths exceeding any other VLF I've ever used. Just upping the gain and speeding the recovery rate up made it do that. I haven't picked one up in about 2 years and I guarantee you could hand me one today out of the bo

I was one of the fortune ones selected to test the V3i as prototype. I can say that using factory modes, the eTrac is superior. But once you get into the expert menu settings of the V3i it changes dramatically in favor of the V3i. There are only so many settings you can play with on the eTrac....the V3i is fully tweakable to your hearts content. I'm thinking hard on trading my eTrac for one

Yep 4800 and 5000 are basically the same. There are a few less menu items on the 4800 but nothing important. All of them are exclusively for certain situation gold prospecting. The Fine Gold timing is just due to pulse machines not being sensitive to small gold...you DONT want this for relic or coins lol you will be drove crazy. If I remember right the other timing was something for hunting the s

jrk -- Yes I have ran the Whites TDI and GPX 4500 & 5000. There's nothing like them for that kind of dirt. With the TDI you can achieve 13-15 inch depths on coins in that kind of dirt with stock coil and a touch more with after market coils but the iron ID is not good on it...with the GPX and the right timing, you can get 18-22 inches on coin size objects with the 11" coil and deep

I would have been in trouble had I been in your shoes if the cat was the land owners. I would have probably broke its head against the under carriage and killed it. I hate cats especially when they climb on me. Instant reaction is to sling it off lol

Tom -- I wrote the book on motion all metal on the F75 lol....well I didn't write a book but I did teach two classes on it at the DIV relic hunts for the nasty Culpeper, VA dirt.
We found the regular (non boost) all metal to handle the soil up there and here a lot better than the boost all metal. It seems like the boost all metal causes them to false more on the ground itself...even with

It happened to me at the treasure depot forums. I went on one of their organized hunts that was very hyped up. We each paid $200 plus had to account for lodging and travel costs plus food. No big deal if we were destined for a decent spot. Well we got to the site and upon the word GO, I was one of the first into the woods. The first thing I noticed was evidence of fresh digging...I have no doubts

Tom -- I'm at work now but I have a video I done with the T2 in boost mode air testing a 58 and some eagle buttons. I will have to dig that off my camera.
OK found it! From the video I am so glad I done it this way. I start in 2+ tone and ramp the sensitivity to 90...ground balance it and then use a marked cinder block as a ruler. The cinder block length wise is 15".
At any rate

Your detector sounds like a problem I had with my first camo edition F75. Boost mode was useless with it...falsed like crazy until I cut the sensitivity down below 50. I thought it was nature of the beast and sold it. Later on I was hunting with a buddy who had a black edition F75. His was smooth as could be even in BP mode. I later got a used camo T2 SE and it also ran smooth.

Oh I had no idea you were in Germany. I still would like to see what you come up with via tests. Our Civil War bullets are soft lead and a good substitute for them is a 1 ounce fishing weight. Our .577 caliber Minie Ball weighs approximately 32 grams and our .69 cal Minie Ball is approximately 47 grams. These are our most commonly found relics.
As a benchmark I just air tested my eTrac with 1

The problem with museums is that they often have more hidden than on display to share with everyone. Our local museums have Civil War displays...both of which consist of a uniform, sword, and one has a rifle and the other just has a few odds and ends. I have more in my collection dug local than both of them. I have offered them some of my relics for display and they didn't want them. They sa

EMS -- Ahh but I'm looking at the bigger objects depth. I don't coin hunt much...I seem to teeter totter between relics and coins though. So what I've noticed is that bigger coils don't really give much increase of depth on say dime size objects but when you get into quarter to silver dollar size objects the depth increase becomes more apparent. In relic hunting we are seeking

EMS -- Keep us posted on that 13" Detech coil. I've came just a hair in buying one. If I can sneak 2-3 inches more than the stock coil I think I would be happy. Problem is....in my soil I can't run the eTrac at 30 sensitivity.
As a matter of fact in some places I've hunted so far, I've had to back it down to 19-20 manual and if running in Auto it wants to run 15-20. S

See, I'm not kidding :-) I'm not upset about anything. Just seems like the "buy only made in USA" thing is a bit out of place here. Especially when afore mentioned USA companies are using foreign products for their appearal lines.

Isn't it a little hypocritical to bring the "buy only Made in USA" thing to the table on a forum....while typing it from an electronic device (PC, mobile phone, etc) that 99% of which is NOT made in the USA? I can certainly understand the premises behind it but how much are you really helping by being selective on which metal detector you buy via where its manufactured....when 99%

1. As said before, I don't like a pinpointer to read from the sides...just from the tip. That would be one of the big changes I would make to the ProPointer.
2. Something besides an on/off push button to activate it...and or an automatic timer to cut it off. I think the VibraProbe people are on the right track with how theirs works.
3. I like vibration over sound so I wouldn't ev

That was my experience with the 15" as well....no gain in depth on coin size objects but I noticed that it tended to ID the deeper targets with more consistent IDs. As Tom noted....the depth is virtually the same but whereas with the 11" coil the IDs would start to jump or be wrong at deeper depths, the 15" would have stronger IDs but no depth gain until you got into belt plate siz

But 20 inches worth of power? Seems QUITE a bit far fetched if you ask me. I had a Gold Bug Pro with 11" coil that barely hit an inground 58 cal minie ball at 10" in all metal. Mine wasn't very sensitive to high conductive targets either. You always hear about the Gold Bug and G2 being good in picking out goods from iron with reasonable depth but not THAT good of depth.
