The answer is simple....both sons did not have any electronic/engineering knowledge. They were simply born into the business. Remember when Troy had them build HIS machine ? Well, the relationship ended badly and Tesoro gained a design they never had before. It was a very small control head with micro processing. After Troy left, the design was used until their demise.....karma ?

Again, thanks for all the replies. As we all know, detector owners are passionate about their purchases. My initial question was only about the differences between the Nox and CTX as it related to relic and coin hunting. My thought was did Minelab incorporate new technology the CTX didn't have, thus making it as good as the CTX. With marketing set aside, does each machine when tuned to optim

Thanks Daniel TN, That is awesome information.....I feel much better now about my Equinox purchase. I recently retired from the USAF and am looking forward to many days of relic and coin hunting.

Thanks everyone for your input. I recently purchased a new Equinox 800 and I love everything about it. I have owned all different models of the Explorer and it was always a love hate relationship due to the awkward weight distribution. I also own an XP Deus and that is my go to machine. Being a technical person, I love the company info for Minelab and Deus. They actually have real engineers with

I have a question about the CTX and Equinox if anyone can answer it. Is there any depth capability differences between the two? I guess I'm asking if both units were set up for optimal performance, would one be able to have any advantage over the other? I really like the GPS option on the CTX but other then that, it's a huge difference in price.
Thanks for your input.

I agree with Cal and Harold's statements. I didn't really want to purchase any overseas detectors but after trying several brands I was quite happy with performance, depth and reliability. A well known detector author told me the problem with US companies is that they have very few people on staff that use the machines they produce. For example, the owner of Deus is an avid relic hunter

It was easy to see this coming. After Jack died both sons had to run the business and neither had a professional electronics background. When the brothers decided to end their joint business relationship, Vince couldn't keep it afloat. To survive, you need engineers to produce new products. That hasn't happened for 10 years or more. It's not enough to change the color of current ma

Just read NASA Tom's notes to Nokta. It is very clear to me that the F75 is as good or better is his notes. It must be a great machine since he chose to compare the Impact to the F75. No offense intended referring to marketing and sheep. I have been detecting for 30 years and have fallen for the hype only to purchase the machine and realize its nothing special. My original question was about

This answers my original question which was is it any better than current machines ? Its a beautiful machine but I need more than beauty to get on the hype train. If it doesn't do any better depth than an F75 or Explorer, its just a competitor. Marketing is a great tool for sheep.

Has anyone who purchased a new Impact compared it to a current machine that you own ? I love the look but don't want to get caught up in the hype. I am not impressed with the Impact videos I have seen so far. It's a nice looking machine but does it really perform any better than current machines such as the F75 or Makro Racer. Just looking for real comparisons.....
Thanks,

Daniel TN,
The batteries on all Nautilus are on the outside just in case they would ever leak battery acid. Doesn't happen often with any detector but this is one way to protect the electronics from contamination of battery acid.

it would be a Nautilus2ba. It is hand made and built to last. Of course I have newer machines but i would sell them all and keep the Nautilus. It was built by a real relic hunter not an engineer who has specs to build by.

Keith said it best concerning ferrous targets. Never thought of it from that angle. I once heard the FCC regulated output strength of metal detectors and that is why an inexpensive machine can almost go as deep as a more expensive machine. The difference being bells and whistles. That would also explain why vlf machines are no deeper than they were 20 years ago. I will always hold tight to my Nau

What do you think is the real difference between new and older(say 20 years old) machines. Do new machines really go deeper ? I know new machines are more ergonomically better designed but what am I missing. I still hunt with a 20 year old Nautilus and it does great. I also have a F75 and T2 which are also very good machine.

Saw this same thing happen at Yorktown Battlefield. Three gentleman were hunting at night and were quite successful by the display of their artifacts as posted by the local news channel. They also showed a picture of their 3 Nautilus detectors. All three received Federal convictions to include jail time, the reposition of their vehicles and of course their equipment......stupid. I have been told

Does anyone have any info on using either of these coil manufacturers ?
Looking at getting a 6.5 x 3.5 coil and found that these companies each build that size. It will be for my Minelab Explorer. Any advice would be appreciated.

Need your advice.....have an opportunity to purchase a very nice Minelab XS. Will use it as a back up unit for both relic and coin hunting. I just found out Minelab won't service it should anything happen down the road. Do you think pass or take a chance that it will hold up. Just concerned that the little things like back light for lcd could fail then your stuck. Of course that is marginal

I guess I look at this differently than most others. After a 22 year career in the USAF I prefer to buy American made products. I have flown to Turkey many times and have seen their cities first hand. They would not be a country I would want to lay down my hard earned money for a detector that was probably reverse engineered from a T2. I remember the initial influx of Chinese goods in the 1980

They were/are a great machine. As Dan said, the 1270 arm configuration is different than a 1265/66. However, the depth results are equal to or better than a 1266. Call Felix at FT and he will give you the scoop.

Hello Harold,
I have had several 1266's over the past 20 years. All were great deep well built units. I spoke with Felix at FT several months ago and he said he takes calls every week from people wanting to know where they can buy a 1266. Something you may want to consider is a Fisher 1270. It is very much like the 1266 except it has a separate control to eliminate iron. I purchased one an

I would agree about the build quality. Reminds me of a Nautilus built machine that was bullet proof. As long as you got a unit Jerry Tyndall built or now the new owner, Lee.

Thanks SD. I too have read they were a real quality built unit built in his electronics shop.....not a garage as earlier stated. It is built like a tank. He was ahead of his time and as you stated couldn't keep up for the demand. Mine has a permanent home here in Virginia.

Anyone have or ever used a Ground Hawk metal detector ? Just purchased one and boy does it go deep !!! Hits a mini ball at 12 inches in my test garden. Mine has the lock/unlock feature which I read is the more desirable machine to have.
Thanks for your responses .

Seems to happen to all of us. I remember getting on the Whiltes XLT train when that machine came out. it was good but depth was just average. I have owned top machines from all the manufacturers and still like my Nautilus DMC 2B the best. It has superior depth to any machine made today and it is a 20 year old machine. I own a Fisher F75 with DST and like it a lot but it still would take that Naut

Thanks Harold, I will be keeping the two for a long time. Just don't care for the new machines that are made today. To me, the real Fisher labs doesn't exist anymore. Just the purchase of the name to add to the Bounty Hunter line up. Didn't really want a new machine but also wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything comparing the Mackro Racer to what I already had.
