Dew, not sure on the Silver half but a clad half hits higher than a quarter on the screen and most silver hits there too.... unless it is gold plated... :-)

I beach hunt a lot, and find a fair amount of gold and silver jewelry. In the past two years I've been using the CTX almost exclusively and have been "fooled" with three finds to date that had a readout in the lower gold range (lower 12/5-15) , had a nice gold finish yet were marked .925..... all three were plated and silver inside. Two recently found are almost identical in size,

As metal detector people, we get to see loads of information on equipment, some of it on new equipment state the IP ratings instead of making it easier for the end user to understand what a piece of equipment can actually do. Since I have the need/want of a waterproof pinpointer, I have been looking around and came up against the IP rating wall again..... I understand that IP-67 is not as good as

Darn nice gills there... and that is the way to have fun catching them too! Used to fish, hunt, and ride but now that I beach detect most days of the week, I've given up most of the other stuff. Now when I can't get out to metal detect, I spend most of my time doing pencil sketches and making coin rings.
Still have all the fishing gear and guns and bow.... if they don't get used

At the Nuclear Plant they were called "tin whiskers" we had an advisory note from Westinghouse and IF I remember correctly an NRC directive to inspect all electronic control boards for those pesky tin whiskers at the next shutdown. Apparently were the cause of a plant trip or two. It is a strange phenomenon that such a small almost microscopic "whisker" will grow and short out

Good find Sven, proper shrinking is best done starting at the middle of the piece of shrink then working both ways..... when dealing with small wires and sometimes close proximity to delicate components, a larger heat gun will work but you risk damage to nearby components plus you don't have control necessary for proper shrinking. Professional heat guns do come with attachments that help but

Alan, I've actually found three grillz but mine have all been at the beach, in the water.... guess you shouldn't smile while getting smacked by a wave! First one was actually quite new and tested at 22k, second one (the next day in the same general area) was plated and the third was actually smaller and dressed up with CZ's, tested good at 14k. No doubt this one was from a female

Just a thought here from a rookie but wouldn't the glass mason jar impede any halo formation considerably? What machines did you have on hand for the attempted find, your arsenal of detectors is ever changing.....

Always good to hear the good stories about Minelab service....seems most all we can read are the negative stories, thanks for that Aaron.... by the way, what were the symtoms of your coil failure?

Steve, great hunt and story... the coins are fantastic. The picture of the wooded area is what stands out for me, I too am from Western Pa. and the chance to be out in the wooded areas like that and chance for old finds are about the only things I miss since moving to Florida...

Mr. Southern, I followed your posts on the CTX (under a different user name, darn computers and my memory) and it was due to your testing and comments that two hours prior to your post I pulled the trigger and bought one..... timing is everything and mine sucked today!
